Slash rounded up a few quotes from Joss Whedon about where the script for The Avengers 2 stands (he says he'll be done in a couple months) as well as what's up with S.H.I.E.L.D. (god I am going to grow tired of typing that out real quick), his new TV show set in the Marvel universe. He'll be directing the pilot super soon, and says this about the show:"You have to bring a bit of spectacle to it. It’s got to be bigger than your average cop show. But at the end of the day, it’s about the peripheral people. It’s about the people on the edges of the grand adventures. The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter. It’s about people who don’t have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, and there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling, but all played on a very human, small level. That’s the appeal of the thing."
So basically it's The Zeppo: The TV Show. Buffy fans know what that means but I'll explain for those of you who do not - "The Zeppo" is an episode in the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that focuses on Xander, Buffy's male friend who does not have any super powers at all. Everybody else keeps telling him to stay out of the way of their big battles because he's going to hurt himself; he spends a day staying away from their big adventure but finds himself in an even bigger one, and in the ends he saves everybody's lives without them ever knowing.
The third season of the show remains the best season because, amongst many things (like the best villain), it then really had enough of a foundation that it was able to flip itself around and mess around with what made it tick in smart, unexpected ways like this. Anyway it sounds like S.H.I.E.L.D. will be all about doing that to the big-ass superhero movies, then. Good stuff!
