After The Overlook

.
Did you know that Stanley Kubrick edited off the last couple minutes of The Shining a week after it had been released in theaters? He went in and chopped it out and then re-released the movie, and that original ending's been lost ever since. (All that exists are a couple of behind-the-scenes pictures, including the one above.) That sort of thing's unthinkable today with movies getting released on every screen between here and Jupiter by the push of a button. Anyway for the first time ever the screenplay for that scene has been released, you can read it here. (via) It sounds terrible, and I think Kubrick made the right decision.

I think he did that while it was still only playing in New York and L.A. "The Shining" didn't immediately 'open wide' the way flicks do now.
He did the same thing after the New York premiere of '2001' - trimming several minutes before it opened around the country.
