Which Is Hotter?

(pics via) Wes Craven's terrific sequel Scream 2 came out fifteen years ago today. I remember seeing this at a free screening in college a few weeks before it properly came out, actually. A huge fight broke out in the theater during the last five minutes and they had to turn the lights on! What a nightmare. Damn you, college bastards! Anyway I know a lot of people find the reveal of the killers in this one a let-down but I love them - one, because Timothy Olyphant is hot (he could stab me with his penis), and two, because Laurie Metcalfe is hysterically over the top while remaining really freaking scary. Those eyes! Jinkies.

I don't think the reveal of the killers is a let down. It's just not as powerful as the first. I mean, Billy and Stu were so integrated in "Scream" that it was really surprising when the reveal came about. (Though in retrospect, their scene in the video store made it pretty obvious they were up to something and that they were both fucking crazy.) Mrs. Loomis only showed up every once in a while to annoy Gail so when it was revealed that she was a killer it explained why her character even existed in the first place. I do think that had the killers been Derek and Hallie (along with Mrs. Loomis) like in the original screenplay then that would have been interesting. It would have been too repetitive to have the boyfriend be the killer but having Sid's new best friend be the killer would have been great. That being said, I love the motives in "Scream 2". Mrs. Loomis wants "good old-fashioned revenge" and Mickey wants to be a media star. Yeah, they were both crazy and over the top but that's what was so fun and admittedly, so real about it because there are actual people who are like that in today’s world.
