Two Girls Enter

.
The Playlist is reporting two names that are up for the role of Johanna Mason in the second Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire. Well technically they are two names, but only one of them is a "name," meaning in the Hollywood parlance someone we're familiar with. The person we are familair with is the lovely the talented the quite literally everywhere Mia Wasikowska.

Now I love Mia, I really really do, but isn't Johanna supposed to be older than Katniss? If you haven't read the books I'm not going to spoil who she is - you shouldn't even be reading this, go away. Git! For the rest of us... a pause... okay I looked her up on the Hunger Games Wiki and I guess I always considered her older because she was a previous winner, but that logic ain't sound since younger people than Katniss are drafted into the Games all the time. I just thought of everybody in the Quarter Quell as older than Katniss, I guess, due to their previous experience. But Johanna was an older sister figure to Katniss too... I don't know, it's been so long since I read them. Anybody?

Plus, Mia is technically older than Jennifer, by about eight months. I just don't know what I am talking about, is the point.

The other person up for the role is somebody named Zoe Aggeliki; I guess she's a model and an actress-to-be - she has a role in the upcoming Percy Jackson sequel, which, okay, they're making another Percy Jackson movie? Sure. So I guess it depends on if they want to go the as-of-now unknown route or the name route.

And can we just get to the Finnick casting already?

This was exactly my problem with who they were considering to cast as Finnick Odair. I read him as in his forties and didn't see him being remotely close to Katniss and Peeta in age. I also read Johanna as older (mid-to-late thirties at least) so it's definitely hard for me to buy Mia or this other chick in the role. We shall see.

@ The Bloody Munchkin,

Finnick is 24 in the books. He won the games when he was just 14. Johanna's age isn't specified, but she's somewhere in her early 20s.

They're both supposed to be in their mid-twenties, and with Jennifer Lawrence already reading older on screen than Katniss did in the book, they should probably be late 20s in the movie. And Mia is a TERRIBLE choice. Not the least of which because she has shown zero ability to project Johanna's aggressive femininity.

I've become more and more enamored with the idea of Emmy Rossum in the role, since she's shown in "Shameless" pretty much everything you need to be Johanna. But no one's talking about her.

Hmm, i've never thought of Emmy Rossum as Johanna, but i do like it. I was on board with Kristen Bell ages ago though.

and yes, Mia would be a TERRIBLE choice. Mia's more of a quiet presence. I can't imagine her throwing an axe to killabitch.

I think Mia has talents not yet seen. After all, she was allegedly chosen for for Fincher's Dragon Tattoo film and turned it down, which makes me think she can pull off the fierce don't-mess-with-me thing.

Speaking of Dragon Tattoo, I also think Rooney Mara would do well as Johanna.

I was hoping for Naya Rivera, who you would only be familiar with if you've seen Glee, but she was always delivering great work on it doing the tough bitch routine and she would nail Johanna. She would add some diversity to the cast and she's about the right age.

Another great choice would have been Mila Kunis but maybe she's gotten too big.
