Good Job, Mr. President

Ok, I don't want to be THAT guy, the Debbie Downer, and I voted for him the first time 'round (and probably will again, just considering the other option), but I'm not impressed. It shouldn't take him 4 years to say it and really, actions speak louder than words. I want affirmative action and I know it's hard and he wants to get re-elected so he wont do anything drastic, but to me that just makes him only slightly better than the other politicians who lack conviction. If Obama truly cared about the legal rights of same-sex couples, it wouldn't have taken him so long to do so little.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being THAT guy, anon. It's our job as minority citizens to not be satisfied and to keep pushing until there's something resembling equality. Symbolically it's a great gesture from him, but that doesn't make anything you've just said untrue. I'm with you.

And to anyone who bitches at us for using this moment to bitch - fuck you, this is a democracy and we're better than neanderthals and Republicans, we will speak up and not tow the line just for politics sake. The moment I turn a blind eye to my rights for a split second because it's the safe thing to do for politics is the moment I lay down and die. It is my job as a citizen to say NOT ENOUGH until it becomes enough. I've never had any intention of voting for anyone other than him and telling everyone to vote for him, but I won't pretend I'm satisfied with the world is because of what he said today, lovely though his personal thoughts on the matter may be, and the future influence they may have on people in the world.

Ahem. I just don't really get into this stuff here at MNPP anymore so a nice pleasant Muriel's Wedding gif seemed the way to go. ;)

In addition, I'm pretty sure the only reason he even said anything is because Joe Biden (inadvertently?) kind of forced comment from Obama. If Biden hadn't said anything, I don't think President Obama would have either. If left wing nuts can have so much conviction in their ludicrous beliefs, I'd like some mainstream democrats with similar oomph.

Or Obama let Biden off the leash to float the trial balloon, stir talk, and set up the President's announcement today. Obama is, you know, one of the savviest political operators of his generation. He probably knows what he's doing.

I don't see that he's a terribly savvy political operator. He's a good public speaker, that's for sure, but when it comes to politicians these days, what you see is never what you get. I will always just assume their every move is calculated by a room full of people. And I agree that he knows what he's doing. That doesn't mean that he knows what Biden is doing. Biden's impulsive and not as smooth as Obama and until Obama's interview, the fact that Biden had come out and said it first was reflecting badly on Obama, so of course he had to say something. I'm pleased that he said what he did, but I think it was nothing more than a smart move to cover his own ass. I'm sure he DOES believe in equal rights, but I don't think he would have said it so plainly if it wasn't for Biden's earlier statements.

I love that you used this picture.

I should probably conjure up something else when the words "gay marriage" are said but somehow it's always Muriel and her hot swimmer.
