It's All Coming Up Kiki

.

Obviously I'm starting to think about my awards for 2012, mentions of it keep infiltrating my posts, but like I keep saying every time the topic comes up they're still a ways away as I have bunches left to see. Still, while I don't want to spoil anything, I must say that a film I liked very much when I first saw it that's surprised me by getting more and more resonant with time is Lars Von Trier's Melancholia. I've been dying to watch it again, and I keep having that shot of Kirsten Dunst's immaculately swollen bosom and miserable face lying beside the stream haunt my brain at random moments.

Which is odd, since I am so not a boob man. Anyway all this was on my brain as I read through this very fine interview with Kirsten by Guy Lodge at Hitfix, which marked a definite moment a long time in the making that I want to express. See, once upon a time I loved Kirsten without reservation. She was the little girl from Interview With the Vampire, she was Torrance from Bring It On (speaking of, I was just thinking the other day that somebody's had to have made a boxed-set of BIO, Dick, and Drop Dead Gorgeous, haven't they? Marketing gold, people!), she could do no wrong! But then...

... she done wrong. And it poisoned the well. They only lasted a couple of years, but the bad vibe lingered at the edges. She did plenty to win me back, and I thought she was wonderful plenty (Marie Antoinette, yo), but as hard as I kept trying to bring back the love as pristinely as it has once lived inside my heart, I couldn't sweep away every mote of what had come between us.

Until now, until today, when she said in this new interview that the director at the top of her wish list to work with is Michael Haneke, and all that Jake business was forgotten. Michael Haneke! Yes, Kirsten! Correct answer! (Take note, Witherspoon.) It's like that time the Grinch's heart explodes or whatever. Redemption, thy name is Dunst!

As an addendum, this post has nothing to do with the fact that Kiki literally just today got a restraining order against a stalker. Nothing to see here!

Can you really blame her for banging that body? Wouldn't you do the same?

Look at it this way: she was just helping him get warmed up and work on his technique so he can move onto bigger and better things. At least that's what I tell myself.

anyhow, Kirsten is one of my favorite young actresses. Probably my favorite. I always seem to take her pretty damn amazing body of work for granted. Interview with a Vampire, Dick, The Virgin Suicides, Bring It On, Crazy/Beautiful, Spiderman 2, Marie Antoinette, Melancholia, Little Women, Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, Kiki's Delivery Service

Her filmography is definitely far more impressive than fellow child star/competitor, Natalie Portman. Even her teenage films were wise choices.
