F.W. Murnau: If it's not in frame, it doesn't exist!
Whenever I write about this movie I write about Willem Dafoe's tremendous work as the monster slash actor Max Schreck, meaning I've given woefully short shrift to Malkovich's marvelous Murnau. (Say that sentence ten times fast.) No longer! Malkovich is totally Dafoe's equal as the famous German director coming unhinged faster than his snuff film's flying through the camera, and the movie wouldn't work half as well if we didn't believe, and oh do we believe, that he'd sacrifice his talent for a little slice of transcendent celluloid. Bravo John Malkovich, and happy 58th birthday!
