A Guided Tour Thru Geek Nirvana

.

Another year, another delightfully bat-shit bonkers weekend of geekery spent at New York Comic Con. As soon as you step onto the floor, the brain-daze takes over and you stumble through the halls like a... dare I say...

... I dare. (Hey Shaun!) I spent the majority of Saturday tucked away inside the IGN Theater where the big movie and television presentations happen, mostly because I wanted to make sure I had a seat for The Avengers panel that was the day's closing act. First up was Terra Nova! They showed an entire upcoming episode (I've been bad keeping up with the show, but I think it aired this week.)

But lemme tell you what, Jason O'Mara looks good in person.
He's built like an action figure!
.

I did get to wander the floor a little bit
after that, and I got to meet Ti West!

That's a blurry him at the arrow. I got him to sign a copy of The House of the Devil's poster, and he was very cool. After that there was a little bit more wandering around the floor...

... and then it was back to the big theater to plunk myself down for several hours trapped with spectacle. First up there was a presentation from Sony. The showed the 3D trailer for the new Underworld movie - Leather! Boobs! Fur! Boobs! - and then they showed a scene plus some extra footage from the Total Recall remake, which I have to admit was pretty spectacular. I might actually find myself excited about this, even though it is gonna be very different beast from what Verhoeven did with the material.

After that came the directing duo behind the Crank movies, Neveldine and Taylor, who were presenting some stuff from their Ghost Rider sequel. I love Neveldine and Taylor, the Crank movies are fantastic, so they alone have got me interested in a new Ghost Rider movie, but something I didn't know about Neveldine and Taylor? They are both really, really hot.

Especially Brian Taylor. He's the director version of Jason Statham!

And they were both as nuts and obscene and funny as the Crank movies would make you think they'd be, and I love them so much forever and ever marry me!

Next up, The Walking Dead panel! Last year's panel was better than this year's for a couple of reasons - Frank Darabont was there, and Andrew Lincoln was there (mmm), plus we didn't yet know that the show was gonna be a total mess so optimism was alive. But the gang seemed enthusiastic (although I wish somebody would've had the balls to ask them about the Darabont debacle) and Jon Bernthal and Steven Yeun and Norman Reedus were looking fine, plus they showed the best scene from this week's premiere (the scene on the highway).

And then it was time for the biggie!

Actually, that picture of a happy Chris Evans is really, really misleading about the mood of the panel. This picture captures the essence of it much better.

Nearly every question asked of the panel - which included Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg (who you've already seen sing his theme song) Mark Ruffalo and Marvel CEO Kevin Feige - was directed at Hiddleston, who was the belle of the ball, so much so that the moderator - hey Chris Hardwick! - asked the audience to maybe direct a question to somebody else and the next question was still for Hiddleston anyway!

And at a certain point Chris Evans seemed totally pissed off about it. Poor thing. I'll focus on just you if you give me the chance, Chris!

Anyway I won't bother describing the footage they showed since everybody's already talked that up across the internet by now, but it continues looking to me like an awesome, awesome time and I cannot wait. I just wish Joss had been there! or at least sent a recorded hello! Goddamn, man.

That was it for Saturday, and after all that Sunday was low-key. I hit the panel for Conan the Barbarian in the morning just to see if Jason Momoa might take off his shirt - he didn't, so I didn't take his picture. Take that! And then I hit up the IFC panel for a couple of their comedy shows - The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret had some great riffing by H. Jon Benjamin and David Cross.

Seen above, Benjamin shoved some poor costumed kid out of the way to grab that microphone because he thought everybody's questions stunk. And then there was the Portlandia panel with show creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein and Jonathan Krisel being interviewed by Seth Meyers.

And then it was back to wandering the floor, and after a couple more hours of that I was numb to the point of brain damage and had to make my escape. Twas a good time, as it is every year. If you want to see some more pictures I took you can hit the jump...

Is that first picture an actual woman in a poison ivy costume, or did that guy dress up one of those "real dolls?"

LOL She was real but now that you've said that I can't unsee it! I wish he'd had a real doll strapped to his side, that would've BLOWN MY MIND.

I was almost positive it was one of those dolls! My next question was going to be, did he just lug it around or did he push it in a wheelchair?

Huh. Ti West is kinda cute in a My Morning Jacket kinda way. Who knew?

I wish my picture had been clearer because he is totally cute in person, Jasper. When I see The Innkeepers in a couple weeks with him there I'll make sure to take a better one.
