So Much Too Much To See In NYC

.
I was fortunate enough to see one of my top-three Fassbinders on a big screen last night - The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant was showing as part of the monthly Queer/Art/Film series they run. It's the sort of movie that seeing it on a big screen feels life-altering. One of those ones that you'll never forget seeing blown up to the size it was intended - the film comes alive in front of you in ways you never knew it was supposed to watching it time and again on a little TV screen. It was a blessing, having the opportunity, one that living in a big city with an active film culture affords me time and again. The show was sold out when I first heard about it over the weekend and I was distraught as only a pampered crazy person would be - I tweeted this:

"It's why I live here so I shouldn't complain but there's so much good programming at NYC theaters these days that it's IMPOSSIBLE to keep up"

Now I am aware that this is a ridiculous thing to complain about. Anyone who loves movies and lives somewhere without access to the awesome stuff this asshole's taking for granted has every right to be shooting me some big ass daggers right now. As the Russian mail-order-bride Natasha put it so succinctly on America's Next Top Model: Cycle 8, "In other people's countries we have war." Indeed.

But I just want you to look at the awesome, beyond awesome, but I am already exhausted just looking at it list of movies I have in my calendar for the next couple of weeks alone that are playing here.

August 25 - Rosemary's Baby - sunset - playing at Brooklyn Bridge Park

September 3 - The Mad Max trilogy - starting at 5:50pm - playing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center for their "Third Time's a Charm: A Weekend of Movie Trilogies" series

September 4 - The Back to the Future trilogy - starting at 5:50pm - playing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center for their "Third Time's a Charm: A Weekend of Movie Trilogies" series

September 5 - The Godfather trilogy - starting at Noon - playing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center for their "Third Time's a Charm: A Weekend of Movie Trilogies" series
Taxi Driver - 6pm - playing at MoMA as part of their "Hot and Humid: Summer Films from the Archives" series

I'm sure there are titles I'm missing; stuff that'll show up at the last minute. And these are just the titles that interest me the most, if you click through to those series' links you'll see more titles. They're showing Buster Keaton all day on Labor Day at Film Forum! FF's also got a festival in honor of NYPD in September including a double-feature of Cruising and Bad Lieutenant on September 12th. Later in the month FilmLinc is having a Tuesday Weld series and they'll show Pretty Poison with Anthony Perkins and Looking For Mr. Goodbar with Richard Gere bouncing around in his jockstrap! I mean, that's not something you miss.

Point is, I'll probably only get out to a third of these, but every one I miss is like a punch to the face. Anyway just excuse my whining - there's a handy guide to NYC screenings for the next couple of weeks!

Thank you for compiling this!! As a fellow New York resident, I totally agree that I can't keep up with all the variety! :D
