Casting Karenina

.

I really really really liked Hanna, if you recall. And not just because Eric Bana wore soaking wet longjohns! (Not that it hurt.) No, it was a terrific movie-time all around. So I'm on a high with regards to its director Joe Wright, where once upon a time my distaste for his film Atonement would've colored such enthusiasms. So I actually click on links having to do with him, and by making such monumental efforts I learn splendid things, like this:

"Keira Knightley and Jude Law are seeking a son, while Matthew Macfadyen and Kelly Macdonald would like an instant brood of five.

These are the screen relationships that will make up one big happy (or rather not-so happy) family in the film version of Anna Karenina that will shoot in Britain and Russia from September. ... Aaron Johnson will play Anna’s lover Vronsky.

... Olivia Williams, who was so good in Wright’s thriller Hanna, will play Countess Vronskaya, Vronsky’s mother. Saoirse Ronan, who appeared with Keira in Atonement and had the lead in Hanna, will play Kitty, Dolly’s sister.

The fast-rising Andrea Riseborough has been cast as Princess Betsy, who always knew how to have too good a time."

That cast, y'all. Holy shit that cast.

What a cast indeed! I wish I knew one thing about "Anna Karenina" (well, more than: train tracks) so I could be even MORE excited. But "Aaron Johnson as the lover" is a damned fine start. (And now, because you mentioned Aaron Johnson, I will go and watch that REM video again.)

The only thing I think of when I think of Anna Karenina is how I got 20 pages in and an ex-boyfriend "borrowed" my copy and I never saw it again. So your train tracks have got me beat, Joe. (And you were gonna watch that video anyway, admit it.)

That cast indeed. I go crazy for the British and I love Joe Wright and atonement. (and I will admit I loved Nowhere Boy for two reasons. Kristin Scott Thomas and Aaron Johnson's accent.)

The fact that neither of you have read it sort of validates me stopping half way, through. Although I'll have to read if I plan on getting through next semester at University.

If any of you had read the book you'd know that Aaron Johnson is totally wrong for Vronsky. He's supposed to be a strong, dashing Army officer who sweeps women off their feet. Michael Fassbender was born to play that role. Aaron Johnson, not so much.
