Thursday's Ways Not To Die

.

I was going to include Nell's thoughts that we hear as voice-over in between these frames but then I looked at them beside each other and they seemed so lovely all on their own I couldn't bear to separate them. I'd forgotten how much of this final moment is just us staring at Julie Harris' face as she shows us Nell giving over to the house and her obsession. Julie Harris is so wonderful in this film - it's one of the great horror performances, and one of my favorites. And today's her 85th birthday! Wish her a happy one, everybody! With memories like the following she's surely keeping happy and warm...

THE HAUNTING was the first horror film I ever saw that transcended the genre and blew me away! God I was so scared when that door starting breathing! And the sounds in the night! Lordy! And I agree - Julie Harris was so great in it - I remember she was so bitchy that it shocked me! And all that sexual subtext! Great film!

Also a favorite.
Unfortunately I read about the film in a collection of essays which also contained D.A. Miller's "The Anal Rope" before seeing it and so now I have that unfortunate association in my brain.

I do quote it often with friends.

"Well why not? The world is full of inconsistencies. Full of unnatural beings, nature's mistakes they're called. You for instance!"

"No one will come any nearer than that. In the night. In the dark."

"You're the dog."

/le sigh

Nell is just one of my favorite horror characters - no, make that movie characters. Julie Harris plays her like no one else could (though I'm still curious to see Lili Taylor, who I love, try in the awful-sounding remake).

Plus, The Haunting is brilliantly written, and Harris gets some great lines:

"It's Theo who's wearing velvet, so I must be Eleanor in tweed."

"IT KNOWS MY NAME!"

Etc. Such a great movie.

I love that y'all are so tempted to throw out quotes from the movie - whenever I think of quotable movies this one doesn't pop to mind but I have totally used all the quotes you're throwing out at least a couple of times in my life. And then there's...

"God! God! Whose hand was I holding?"

Which just chills me in itself.

I might have to watch this for the 100th time tonight after all this enthusiastic chatter. This movie's so good!

I was just talking about this movie last night. I love it love it love it. I need to invent a machine that will not only allow me to travel through time, but will also merge reality and fiction so I can marry Theo.
