EW has talked to Gary Ross, director of Pleasantville and now the man who will direct the first film of The Hunger Games trilogy, about the film - which he says should start filming in the Spring - and about casting its lead, Katniss. He says that he hasn't met with anyone yet and that thankfully the studio understands that a star isn't important for the part - that the books are the star and the pressure's on finding the right girl to fill out Katniss' complicated character. For some reason they go on to ask if he can reveal who might be playing Haymitch specifically, and mention both Robert Downey Jr. - I think we know the sounds issuing forth from my lungs at that suggestion - or that dude from that magic-cripple-doctor show, and I like his response:
"I’ve talked to Suzanne extensively and I feel like I understand the character really, really well. I feel like I know who that girl needs to be... What makes Katniss attractive is her strength and her assuredness and her defiance and ultimately her compassion. And I don’t mean just physical strength. I mean a real strength as a human being. She knows her own truth. She feels deeply and fiercely. And this is something that the actress has to bring with her."

"I’ll tell you very soon. I promise. It would be wrong I think to announce it before we’ve actually cast them or spoken to them.".

I just finished reading the trilogy last week, and boy was it addictive! I hope that they can make the film as breathless and captivating as the book was. But when I finished, I had a feeling they'd pursue your favorite RDJ for the role of Haymitch! I think he's just the first person people think of when the role calls for a drunk.
