The Song Of Roadhouse Whiskey On His Breath

.
Did y'all see the news the other week that infamous flop Carrie: The Musical is being reworked to maybe get staged again here in NY? I'm not much of a musical follower (ha, understatement) but I am a fairly gargantuan Carrie fan so I did know the vague details of this show's legendary abysmal reputation.

I've been meaning to look for the bootleg of the soundtrack - it was never released - but just never gotten to it. But just now I randomly stumbled across this clip of a performance of a song from the show, called "And Eve Was Weak" (!) Oh glorious! I can pretty much recite all of Piper Laurie's dialogue, her every inflection, and I can't tell you how often the phrase, "And I liked it... I LIKED IT!" echoes across the walls of my apartment. So a song called "And Eve Was Weak" hits my buttons like something nuts. It stars Betty Buckley as Carrie's mother Margaret - yes, the same Betty Buckley who played Carrie's teacher Miss Collins in DePalma's glorious movie. Good lord I can only imagine the camp of it all. This has probably been around for ages but it's new to me so it's probably new to some of y'all too. So sit right back and plug it up and listen...

I'm one of of about 12 people who managed to sit through a full performance of "Carrie" while it was in previews, and I can tell you that I sat there like an audience member of "Springtime for Hitler," horrified, perplexed and utterly embarrassed for the poor actors on stage. They could re-work the thing to death and it will never be good. Unless, of course, they play it as pure camp.

From what I understand, the new version will jettison at least a third of the material from the original production, not to mention the drastically misconceived staging and design. I still don't think it will really be successful (I'm not one of those who believes the show was a lost masterpiece), but I think it will make the superfans happy.

I saw a really poor quality video of the whole show recently, and I have to say that overall, it was really, really bad. I particularly winced when Carrie sang a Disney-esque number and actually danced with her own shoes and dress, which she had animated with her telekinesis. Really? Carrie as a Disney princess? However, there were a couple of really beautiful standout songs (google "Evening Prayers" and "I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance").
