Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:
Ouisa Kittderdge: The girl worked just to stay alive. She was one of those armies of people who come to New York filled with dreams, and end up on a treadmill, working and working, forgetting why they came here.

For reasons you can probably imagine this passage from Six Degrees of Separation passes through my head often, living and working in New York. It comes in the middle of the passage where Paul (Will Smith) is romancing (and ultimately robbing blind) Elizabeth (Heather Graham) and especially Rick (Eric Thal, mmm).

The way Stockard Channing delivers the lines is so impossibly sad. Earlier in the film she talks about visiting South Africa and jokes that they were hoping to see only the worst off and that joke always echoes here for me - we see Ouisa, surrounded by her fabulous wealthy friends, telling this story about poor kids being swallowed up by poverty and injustice and its come right to her doorstep. Thankfully Ouisa sees it too. God I love Stockard's performance in this so very much.

All that seriousness aside, did I just mention Eric Thal? Dude's been on my mind this week ever since I read that he and Charlize Theron are supposed to be dating. Eric Thal hasn't been on anybody's mind in fifteen years! But I don't mind having him back on my mind. He was missed from my mind, really, and I didn't even realize it.

"I was wondering if I could fuck you...?"

Did Charlize and Stuart Townshend break up without me hearing about it? That makes me sad.

It made me sad too. But that was like A MILLION YEARS AGO so I've gotten over it. How dare you not follow their love life reverentially!

This is one of those movies I watch again every now and then just for Stockard Channing's performance. She's so good; should have won a ton of awards. Her final speech gives me chills every time.
