Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

you can learn from:

Monster (2003)

Selby: We can be as different as we wanna be, but you can't kill people!

Aileen: SAYS WHO? I'm good with the Lord. I'm fine with him. And I know how you were raised, alright? And I know how people fuckin' think out there, and fuck, it's gotta be that way. They've gotta tell you that 'Thou shall not kill' shit and all of that. But that's not the way the world works, Selby. Cuz I'm out there every fuckin' day living it. Who the fuck knows what God wants? People kill each other every day and for what? Hm? For politics, for religion, and THEY'RE HEROES! No, no... there's a lot of shit I can't do anymore, but killing's not one of them. And letting those fucking bastards go out and rape someone else isn't either!

Over at The Film Experience Nathaniel has been going through the 2000s year by year chatting about his favorite flicks from each. He's just gotten to 2003, and he's done gone and reminded me that I've got to rewatch Monster soon. The film didn't make his top 10, but it probably would've made mine that year if I'd been keeping track at that point - not only am I firmly ensconced in Camp Theron after that astonishing performance, but I'm one of the few (very very few, it seems) that find Christina Ricci's performance in that film to be a wonder as well. Oh well. Perhaps I'll watch the movie again soon and be able to defend it better than my thin memory would right now.

And as long as I'm directing you over to TFE, I wrote up a short piece about Punch-Drunk Love there earlier. Barry & Lena forever!!!

I think Christina Ricci was astonishing. It amazes me she was overlooked. I want to smack random people in the street for it.

Monster is still a stunner. Whither Patty Jenkins.
