Nick Nack Paddle Whack

That title will make sense I imagine eventually. Sorta. Sam Mendes is picking his next movie, y'all! Via The Telegraph:

"Netherland, a best-selling book about cricket, is to be turned into a film by director Sam Mendes and US chat show icon Oprah Winfrey.

The Oscar-winning director has asked acclaimed playwright Christopher Hampton – who wrote the screenplay version of Ian McEwan's Atonement – to adapt the novel, by Joseph O'Neill, which is about a group of expats who play the game in New York.

O'Neill had been compared to F Scott Fitzgerald, Saul Bellow and VS Naipaul by the US literary establishment and it is thought a film version could dramatically increase cricket's profile among Americans.

The film rights to the book are owned by Winfrey's film company Harpo Films, and the firm has been in negotiations with Mendes, who lives in New York with his wife Kate Winslet.

Mr Hampton said he had been nervous about trying to adapt Netherland, which he described as "a most seductively... and beautifully written book", but eventually had been persuaded by Mendes' persistence.

"I quail at the idea of adapting it. This is a very difficult project, I know that," he told The Observer.

"When Sam first asked me, I said it was too difficult and that I could not do it. But Sam was very persistent and quite eloquent too. I did think eventually: 'Ah yes, I can see a way.'"

Mr Hampton said Mendes felt he had to turn the book into a film.

"He told me there really isn't anybody else who could make this film, since he is both a film director and an expat cricket-lover living in New York," he said.

On the difficulty of making a film about cricket accessible to American cinemagoers, he added: "I don't think it is possible to make cricket clear to people who don't understand the game. But luckily there isn't very much ball-by-ball stuff in this novel and it is actually more popular in the US than we imagine it is."

So cricket uses paddles, right? Hence this post's title. Paddle whack! It all makes sense. Voila! Magic. Yeah, that's all I got on this. Sigh.

Bats. I'm afraid cricket bats was the answer we were looking for there. But thanks so much for playing.
