Eleven B&W Frames From The Mist

,

I'm generally a defender of Frank Darabont's somewhat divisive version of Stephen King's The Mist - I thought the film was solid if not wholly spectacular - but after watching it on DVD a few weeks ago in the special edition's black-and-white version like it was originally intended to be seen... well I'm more sold on it than before. The special effects that were iffy - like the tentacles at the start - look better in the black-and-white, and the 50's Monster Movie feel the drain of color gives the picture just sets the mood better. They shoulda released it this way. Still not 100% on the new ending, but this does right some of the slight wrongs in the theatrical version. So I took some frames to show off the scary prettiness.

i'm surprised you didn't like the ending. That was my favorite thing about it.

I didn't hate the ending like a lot of people did, I just wasn't totally sold on it. I thought it needed just a lil' push and it could've been there. I'm trying to be vague in case people haven't seen it (not that I ought to care at this point) but I didn't really buy that these characters that had made it so far would do what they did right before that awful ironic twist at the very end. I liked the twist itself, but what came right before, it needed to convince me of it more.

I told you B&W was better! I'm with you on the ending - didn't hate it, didn't love it. But it certainly sold the point regarding hope and what happens when you lose it too fast.

The original ending made me angry and then I was all "but the rest of the movie was kinda crap too so I actually don't care that much!"

Fascinating story.

Thanks for posting these! Wasn't a fan of The Mist, but I'd give it another viewing if I could get my hands on the B&W version.

I've found Marcia Gay Harden to be likable but in this movie she really brought it as a maniacal bitch. Her character was a better antagonist than the creatures. EXTREMELY devout religious types usually make great movie villains IMHO.
