Quote of the Day

.
In the middle of an affecting piece about a soldier who was discharged because of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy - and more specifically, his attractively giant ass - Rich at FourFour takes the time to slide over to Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming Big Gay Gut-Punch Brüno and to add this:

"In the end, the reason for the ban on open gays in the military seems to come down to what it always has: the discomfort of the ignorant and hateful. That we always end up acquiescing to those who are misinformed, desperate for a false sense of superiority or just plain incorrect is only getting more infuriating (and it started out pretty fucking infuriating). You know, a few weeks ago a rash of premature Brüno examinations broke out all wondering if Sacha Baron Cohen's gonzo outreach (exposing the idiocy of the hateful via an over-the-top gay stereotype) was, in fact, harmful to the cause of gay equality. I know that the bigger picture is important, but I wonder if zooming in on this case might be helpful. By assaulting homophobes with gayness, he's inflicting a little bit of pain on them for the suffering they've caused. It isn't political retribution, it's practical retribution. Instead of a political activist, perhaps Brüno is best viewed as a superhero. There's a reason why Batman works in the shadows and alleys, not at City Hall, you know?"

The humorless reaction from the insipid and cowed gay-rights-establishment towards Brüno has been predictable but still galling - they do not speak for me, yo - so I'm glad to see somebody else annoyed and putting their frustration about eloquently, as Rich always does. If somebody's not getting Brüno's gag - in the absence of a gag-reflex, naturally - that's their fucking problem, and SBC need not apologize or dumb down his material to spell it out for the fucking nimrods to catch up. We are laughing at you, nimrods! And you don't even get it! Ha fuck you.

I've thought about this issue for a couple of weeks now, and I'm with you JA...screw the idiots of the world! If your views on homosexuality are so malleable that they can be negatively shaped or reshaped by Bruno, then you probably weren't on "our side" to begin with and likely never were going to be -- not in any meaningful way, anyway.

Am I allowed to be kind of exhausted by the whole SBC thing, though? Not like nimrod's the worst I've ever been called anyway.

I've thought on it a bunch too, shaun, and I just really am so tired of giving a fuck that that's where I've fallen too. I give too much mind to watch morons think. Fuck them, I have no energy left for it. SBC is on our side, and if people misconstrue his intentions then that is their damn bubble to live in.

And Joe, you just need to not pay it so much attention. It's just a mid-Summer tard comedy in the end anyway. ;-)

I'm fighting a losing battle over on queerty.com defending SBC against a few uptight and/or humorless gays.

I hate trying to explain satire to people.

I am so glad to both share and hear this opinion being expressed. "Political Correctness" has gotten out of hand. Funny is funny, and if that funny is also socially concious, then all the better. I'm just amazed that Mr. Cohen hasn't been assaulted or at least threatened, while making these films.
