That Bromantic Comedy

First off, let me just say this one more time: Paul Rudd, you are adorable.

Okay, so what is this weird movie's deal? This post is probably going to be lame but I've finally just decided to put some thought to keyboard on this one since it's been batting around my brain all week and I haven't really gotten a handle on it. There was all that chatter the other week about Andy Samberg's (ugh) role as Rudd's gay brother who only sleeps with "straight" men (which I hope they acknowledge how crazy, yet actually espoused by actual crazy people in the real world, that entire concept is). And now I'm seeing the posters for this movie in the subway:

And it's kind of ridiculous how a) distant they place Rudd from Jason Segel, as if if they dare to, I dunno, even come close to touching each other this thing would get really gay really fast, or B) just how awkward the two of them look in the posters. Like... hey! Uh... hi there. Um... yeah, we're standing here. Two guys. Two dudes. And... stuff.

I don't know. I think a funnier poster would be the two of them just totally on each other. But then perhaps some people would read it as gay = funny, or them pretending to be gay equals funny, and therefore that'd homophobic, perhaps? I just think they should play with the thin line they're walking here a little more straight-forwardly, a little more playfully, than they are. It's what the movie's about and they could be doing a better job. Poke the notion with a stick! Deflate our silly PC stances. Don't be so coy with the fact that you're trying to get straight dudes, the demographic this film is obviously relying on, to see a movie that's... shh... a little gay. Come on, fellas! Rudd should totally be blowing raspberries on Segel's tummy!

There's just a whole bunch of awkwardness that I'm having trouble wrapping my (tiny tiny) brain around in this movie's ad campaign. Am I nuts? I mean, it's not that I'm offended by this movie's concept or anything; they just seem to be playing it (ahem) a little too straight, as if they're afraid of something. I think they should push it further. But then maybe the movie does... we'll see on March 20th...

What's wrong with Andy Samberg? I wouldn't mind a few more posts on him! I was excited by this movie but so far the jokes are just lame. I think you maybe are picking up on the fact that it isn't sure what it is and right now it is overly cautious about what it isn't. Have you ever noticed how often Andy invites gay premises on his skits? Insecurity or is he playing himself?

Give or take a couple bits here and there I do not find Samberg funny or cute. So you should look elsewhere for Samberg love, my friend. ;-)

I don't understand the premise of this movie....I mean I do, but I don't. He doesn't have any guy friends to be his best man. But he has a brother and a dad he could just as easily ask, no? Surely one of them would say yes.

I dunno, but I love me some Paul Rudd and Jason Segel.

The whole subplot with the gay brother who only sleeps with straight men reminds me of the subplot in Wedding Crashers about the weird younger brother who was in love with Vince Vaughn's character. I really did not like that subplot AT ALL. He's a creepy goth artsy guy, he must be gay!! It was not funny.
