Quote of the Day

.
Michael Haneke's Funny Games, original and remake flavor, is meant to be an intellectualized exercise of sorts on the (American) cinema's love affair with extreme violence. It's not a straight-forward film by any means. I guess you could say it's mainly slasher-type movies that it's playing off of, since that's what the film positions itself as, sort of, even though it's all more... deconstructive... than that.

Anyway, in an interview with BD, routine slasher director / producer Wes Craven was asked what he thought of Funny Games and Michael Haneke and had this to say:

"I feel like he needs to get laid."

Alright he does say a little more, so click over to read it, but basically that's the essence of what he gets at. And surprisingly I'm not gonna argue with it - Funny Games certainly is Michael Haneke having a stick up his ass. But I love that stick up his ass!

I should note that Craven also calls Haneke "like an unhappy young man" and I can't figure out if he's just not aware who Haneke is (nobody's mistaking Haneke for young if they know who he is) or if he's just saying that Haneke's stick-up-his-ass-iness seems to come from the sort of self-righteous anger you see more often coming from juvenile thought processes. Hmm...?

HA! Oh, Wes Craven, I forgive you for lots of things after that quote. Not Cursed, of course, but many other things.
