Make Me A Match

I feel as if I should do something about the Oscars since they are on Sunday, but y'all know I don't have that many horses in this horse-race. Still... what the hell. Here's my opinion, for whatever very very very little it's worth. Here are all the noms if you're a sane person and don't have them memorized.

Best Picture
Will Win - Slumdog Millionaire
Should Win - The Reader
Should Win, Runner-Up - Ugh. I guess Milk or Slumdog, although I say that with very very little enthusiasm for either.
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Synechdoche, New York

Best Director
Will Win - Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Should Win - Stephen Daldry, The Reader
Should Win, Runner-Up - David Fincher, so he can go back to making good movies and stop whoring himself out for Oscars
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Darren Aronofsky, The Wrestler

Best Actor
Will Win - Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Should Win - Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Should Win, Runner-Up - Richard Jenkins, The Visitor
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Best Actress
Will Win - Kate Winslet, The Reader
Should Win - Kate Winslet, The Reader
Should Win, Runner-Up - Melissa Leo, Frozen River
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Kate Winslet, The Reader

Best Supporting Actor
Will Win - Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Should Win - Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Should Win, Runner-Up - Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

Best Supporting Actress
Will Win - Penelope Cruz, Vicky Christina Barcelona
Should Win - Viola Davis, Doubt
Should Win, Runner-Up - Penelope Cruz, Vicky Christina Barcelona
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Samantha Morton, Synecdoche, New York (I know it's a bit iffy whether she's supporting or not but I really think everyone is supporting to PSH in the movie since it basically all takes place in his head, or filtered through his head that is)

Best Original Screenplay
Will Win - Milk
Should Win - In Bruges
Should Win, Runner-Up - Wall*E
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Charlie Kaufman, Synechdoche, New York

Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win - Slumdog Millionaire
Should Win - The Reader
Should Win, Runner-Up - Blah. I guess Slumdog. I agree with the criticism that Doubt is still too stagy and wasn't opened up enough for a movie (although I really wish I'd seen the play because the words are fantastic).
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let the Right One In - I'm reading this book right now and the choices Lindqvist made in adapting his own book are perfection

Best Animated Feature
Will Win - Wall*E
Should Win - Wall*E
Should Win, Runner-Up - I didn't see Bolt so that turd Kung-Fu Panda wins by default!
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Wall*E

Best Costume Design
Will Win - I have no idea. The Duchess is all old and frilly, right? That one.
Should Win - Australia, for putting Hugh in those pants.
Should Win, Runner-Up - Milk, for taking James Franco out of his.
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - The Fall

Best Make-Up
Will Win - Benjamin Button
Should Win - The Dark Knight
Should Win, Runner-Up - Hellboy 2
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - The Dark Knight - the Joker makeup is goddamned amazing

Best Visual Effects
Will Win - Benjamin Button
Should Win - This is where I will give it to Benjamin Button
Should Win, Runner-Up - The Dark Knight
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Benjamin Button

Best Cinematography
Will Win - Slumdog
Should Win - And this is where I'll give it up for Slumdog
Should Win, Runner-Up - The Reader
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - The Wrestler

Best Documentary Feature
Will Win - Man On Wire
Should Win - Herzog!
Should Win, Runner-Up - Herzog!
My Choice, Nominated Or Not - Herzog!

And that's all I'm guessing. I'm not even going to pretend I can make an intelligent pick on the rest of the categories having a) not seen any of them (hello short films! hello foreign films!), or b) don't really pay well enough attention when watching a movie to even start to pretend (hello, sound mixing!).

I don't get the "Should Win" for "Slumdog." How hard is it to stand in a slum in India and spin around with a camera?

(I hated that movie with a righteous, pure, Flannery O'Connor-esque hatred.)

Your pure hatred makes me smile, Mike. I wish I were that strong! No, I do think Slumdog was a visually attractive movie; I will give it that. Out of the Academy's choices it probably has the most images seared into my brain. But honestly I think the noms in this category are kind of weak this year though, or at least not really the films I would've gone with at all.

I just don't get the Heath bit.
Can someone explain it to me?
