I Beg To Differ

.
The following is Quint at AICN talking about what he sees as a lack of need for a series reboot for the Nightmare on Elm Street movies while discussing the news that a director - Samuel Bayer, who directed the iconic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video - has been named for said reboot:

"... I don't think making a contemporary verison for the character [of Freddy Krueger] sounds very appealing to me. That doesn't mean that the guys at Platinum Dunes can't do a kick-ass movie. My fear is that they can get away with goofy teenager shit in FRIDAY THE 13th, but go back and watch the first three NIGHTMARES and even though they're about teenagers they're not campy. When the series began to get campy it died."

Listen, I worship the first Nightmare film and like bunches of pieces of the following two films but those things are riddled with camp from the get-go. Moreso the second and third films - the second is high camp craziness - but even the first film has the glorious performance by Ronee Blakely as Nancy's mother Marge, pulling a booze bottle out from under the towels in the hallway closet for Christ's sake. I know what he's getting at, that Freddy was actually still scary and hadn't turned into a silly pun-machine in the first couple of films, but campy my friends they most certainly still were.

All that said, I agree that the series does not need to be rebooted as long as Robert Englund is still kicking around and willing to play the part (which he most certainly will always be until the day he dies).
