"But you should all know about make-up. Your wives must be geishas."

.
DH has an interview with the director PJ Hogan about his upcoming chick-flick Confessions of a Shopaholic, where thankfully the topic glides over to Muriel's Wedding because that's all I really care to hear about if I'm being honest... thereby proving all that he says below is true:

"Question: Are you surprised that Muriel’s Wedding has still kind of stood the test of time?

Hogan: Yeah, I really am surprised. It is the movie that people keep bringing up. And, they keep bringing it up to Toni Collette, as well, who’s been in a lot of very, very successful movies, but whenever we talked, she always says, “it’s still Muriel’s Wedding. To a lot of people, I’ll always be Muriel.” And, I love that. We had no idea at the time that we were making a film that it would become what it was.

DH: You didn’t have much money, either.

Hogan: Well, we had very little money. I mean, that was when the films made on– as they say in Australia, the smell of an oily rag. But she stuck around. She’s a character who won’t go away, which is great, because I had all the points in that film."

I know that if I were ever to see Toni Collette in person I would start quoting Muriel at her with the first line and I would not stop until I'd quoted every single line right up to "Goodbye, Porpoise Spit!" and sometime in between I'm sure the police would have to be called and it'd be very very embarrassing. So I'm definitely one of those people to whom Toni will always be Muriel.

But it's not entirely true what I said about not really caring a lick about Shopaholic otherwise... it's just that I mostly only care because Hogan was the man behind Muriel. It's a catch-22 type thing we've got going on here. Although I do also want to see Shopaholic because of Hugh Dancy of course...

"on the smell of an oily rag" is an Aussie phrase? I thought it was universal!

I love Muriel's Wedding so much. Just love it.

I'd never heard the phrase before, for what that's worth.

I probably talk about Muriel too much but I can't help it. There aren't many days when a line from it doesn't pass through my mind. It's easily in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.
