Well This Came Out Of Nowhere

.
Granted, I hadn't been paying loads of attention to what Roman Polanski has been up to except for all the mumbling about the possible reopening of his pedo-trial (now delayed btw); the last I'd heard work-wise about him was that he wasn't doing that movie about Pompeii... I'd not heard anything about the following newly announced project til just now as it's about to start shooting (via):

"Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski is to direct his first contemporary thriller in more than twenty years. His new project, THE GHOST, will begin shooting in Berlin in two weeks’ time, on February 4th.

The movie tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang, (played by Pierce Brosnan) who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the USA in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (played by Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghostwriter is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang’s wife, Ruth (played by Olivia Williams) and his aide (played by Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations. Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and recent Golden Globe® Tom Wilkinson have also joined the cast."

They're talking about the Kim Catrall I think they're talking about, right? Uh... how did that happen? Same with Jim Belushi. Random effing cast, this. 'Cept for Ewan of course, who seems like a great fit for Polanski's filmic world.

Anyway, Polanski yay! Hopefully he'll make the first movie of his that I've really enjoyed since Death and the Maiden (that'd be 15 years ago, y'all).

I seem to recall that Nicolas Cage and Tilda Swinton were originally attached to this (as the writer and wife respectively), which might have been interesting. Ideally I'd keep McGregor, bring back tilda and get rid of brosnan, but we'll see how it goes.
