1) Every year they suck me in - I think, oh I'll wait to read the nominations online once I get to work... and then they tell me the nominations are at 8:30 which is exactly when I leave for work most days so I always say screw it and sit on my hands and watch the nominations anyway and get in to work a couple minutes late. Well this morning, I think I possibly woke up half the building when they announced Kate's nomination for Lead Actress for The Reader. Because I think my lady just won herself a lead Oscar (none of that Supporting nonsense for her) and for the better performance (in the correct category) to boot! Fingers crossed, knock on wood, all that, of course.
Love all the love - so much love! - for The Reader, but it's a shame that The Wrestler (besides Mickey and Marisa, yay!) proved too esoteric for them. That was the other one (along with Wall*E... sigh) in my Top 10 that I thought might slip in... actually, I thought it had a better shot than The Reader. Proves me wrong for doubting the ever-strong power of The Holocaust Movie. At least now I have a film in the Best Picture race that I actually liked though. Not that it'll win.

2) Love the Melissa Leo nomination; just wish they would've swapped out Jolie for Sally Hawkins though. Blurgh to the whole co-nomineed Brangelina debacle, I say.
3) Herzog, y'all!
4) They're really not gonna be able to resist having Javier give Penelope that statue now, are they? Even though I think Viola Davis deserves it a little more, I'm surprisingly alright with this scenario. You have Almodovar to thank for that, Penny.
5) Even though I didn't much like the movie, it's nice that Harvey Milk's name just became an even bigger deal right now.
You can see all the noms right here, or see them and join in the conversation at The Film Experience.

Richard Jenkins! yay!
I soooo hope Penelope thanks Pedro Almodovar in her, what I think will be, inevitable win. The biggest issue in her way was Kate Winslet in The Reader and now that Winslet is in lead and will surely win for that (i'd still be nervous if they didn't like the film as a whole, but they obviously did) there's only, really, Viola Davis posing a threat. But, in cases like this, they tend to choose the one they already know.
