Synecdoche's Trailer

.

My eyes perked up a bit in their mid-afternoon malaise when I caught this link: Yahoo! has the first trailer for the latest Charlie Kaufman joint (and by "latest" I mean "first," in that it's his first directing gig... not his first writing gig obviously, since I worship at his alter thanks to Eternal Sunshine - especially Eternal Sunshine - and Adaptation) called Synecdoche, New York. Watch the trailer. Love the trailer. Even though word's been mostly mixed from what I've heard, I will be there opening weekend - October 24th! - for this sucker, rest assured. Here's some grabs I took... (that look on Samantha Morton's face in the 4th picture is killing me)

I mean... that cast of women is just to die for. Samantha Morton and Emily Watson! Catherine Keener and Michelle Williams! Dianne Wiest and Hope Davis! And maybe I can stomach PSH... I used to like him very much. Either way, extremely hopeful this one's a keeper.

Used to like him very much?

Was it Along Came Polly? Mission: Impossible III?

While both of your suggestions are worthwhile, harry, they're not it. I didn't really want to admit what it was, because it's kind of petty. But I thought his performance as Capote was terribly overrated, ESPECIALLY in comparison to Heath Ledger in Brokeback. And his Oscar win made me bitter towards him. Moreso when Crash stole Best Picture. And I'm bringing up a very sore subject here! I don't want to talk about these things!

Okay okay, deep breaths, I'm fine. I loved PSH in Happiness and Magnolia and Boogie Nights and The Talented Mr. Ripley and the list goes on. And he's a hometown boy for me, too, so I have to remind myself of that. Plus, he and I shared a very awkward moment when he came into the movie theater I worked in during college and I wouldn't speak to him and just sort of glared as he asked for napkins. It was wonderful.

He played one of the coolest villains in MI:3, in my opinion.

Thanks for divulging that. Not only did I feel Capote was slightly overrated, I felt that his performance was of the sort of (this might be overly harsh) SNL-impression variety, like Cate Blanchett's Katherine Hepburn, though I love Cate Blanchett (her Hepburn, however, was a caricature of the woman, who, granted, may have been a bit of a caricature naturally). I thought the first 5 minutes of Capote was just so brilliantly chilly and distanced with the far-off shots of the Clutter house at the end of a road lined with bare trees under a winter sky, but the film let me down (Chris Cooper's hatchet-face was the best performance in the film, I think).

I understand your bittnerness completely and without reservation now that you explain it. In fact, not only was the Best Actor and Best Picture Oscar stolen, but also the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The scene with the father-in-law and the football game rocked me to the core.
