I Would Wish You A Happy Birthday, Will Smith...

.
... but this news is weird and I retract any birthday wishes until I have a better handle on it. Via BD:

"Warner Bros. has set in motion a prequel to the Will Smith starrer "I Am Legend," according to Variety.

The plan is for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, with Francis Lawrence returning to direct.

... The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.

Making a prequel was the only way to extend a franchise that grossed $584 million worldwide for Warner Bros. and keep Smith in the lead role. His character was killed in the first film, after extracting a potential cure for the virus for the scattered survivors."

Yeah, I don't give a flying hooey if that last paragraph spoiled the first movie for anybody, because the movie ruined itself with a lame-ass final half an hour and I am saving your eyeballs the trouble. I am a hero, dammit.

But see... on the one hand, I do wonder if maybe this could be a good thing. I am a fan of director Francis Lawrence's movie Constantine, and the first half or so of Legend is very good, and Will Smith is very good in it. If only those unbelievably crappy CG swarms of monsters had been avoided! And that shit ending. Maybe the filmmakers got the hint, since everyone agreed that that stuff sucked, and they'll keep that shit to a minimum. Who knows. Blah.

Really, I just assumed that the 8 bucks I spent on my ticket was the total gross of this movie. Other people saw it?

It was a really big hit, like everything Will Smith does. If only he'd make a solidly entertaining from start to finish movie with all his power.
