I'd seen the trailer for Vin Diesel's Babylon AD a couple of times, but only the last time I was subjected to it did I notice the director is Mathieu Kassovitz, the man responsible for the 1995 masterpiece La Haine. It was like a smack upside the head. Here's this movie I had ZERO interest in, and suddenly a director I have MUCH interest in is revealed as the force behind it? Quelle surprise! Anyway, thankfully for us all (us = me and my sanity), Kassovitz just told us all not to see his movie. Via DH:

"It's pure violence and stupidity. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters... instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24."
He goes on to blame studio interference... unsurprisingly, FOX.
Well, with this and Gothika under your belt here in the States, Mathieu, perhaps it's time to head back to France and make interesting movies again. No?

Yeah, La Haine is one of my favorites, even among my Criterion DVDs exclusively. Currently The Crimson Rivers sits at #76 on my Netflix Queue.
He's only directed 6 movies, I believe, including this new one, which, based on the trailers (not exactly a reliable way to judge a film's quality, I know; on the other hand: Chuck Steak, er...Vin Diesel), I'm glad to see he's disavowing.
I had a feeling something like this would happen. Good things don't happen when Vin Diesel's around, do they?
Charlotte Rampling, though!?
Charlotte Rampling was in Basic Instict 2. Enough said.
Poor Mathieu.
