Special Mother's Day Edition! The Greatest Movie...

... for this year's Mother's Day?

Of course, that's advice coming from someone who got weeks worth of glee out of the fact that I recently showed Rosemary's Baby to a very pregnant friend, so your mileage, as they say, may vary when it comes to my recommendations.

Inside is... let's put this delicately... not for everyone. It's one of the most violent films I've ever seen. I like to think that I'm rather jaded when it comes to being shocked, but man alive, this flick had my jaw wide open and my hands literally pressed against the sides of my face by the end.

I'm purposefully going to stay away from laying out too much of the plot in case someone does decide to pick this flick up from what I say and give it a whirl, but the fact that the main character is a very pregnant woman makes the violence all the more difficult to (ahem) stomach.

So makes no mistakes, this shit is hardcore, and I don't reccomend it to anyone that doesn't think they can handle that sort of thing. But besides some problems I had with directorial choices - some sound and music issues, an annoying moment of quick- and jump-cutting - this is a relentlessly horrifying film that ingeniously side-steps all the usual clichés of this genre. What I mean is, people do the things we usually yell at the screen for them to do in these situations, and it never works. I love seeing genre conventions flouted this way, so every time this happened here - and it happens several times - it made me very happy.

Weird side-note - Without realizing it was happening, I've had a very Beatrice Dalle week - I caught Betty Blue over the weekend and now this... chick is a freak.

And speaking of this holiest of holidays known as Mother's Day, here are some fun links that remind me of a post I did two years ago for this holiday -- here's my link: Five Bad Moms For Mother's Day -- I'm not sayin' the world is aping me or anything... ahem... anyway, links!

--- FearNet lists the Top 10 MILFs, aka Moms I'd Like to Fear!

--- Kindertrauma has gone all out - they've got a list of 20 of the most horrifying movie mothers in two parts - here's part one (10-1), and here's part two (20-11) - as well as a list of 10 Horrible Mothers From Non-Horror Movies.

If anybody finds any more lists like this celebrating the holiday, let me know in the comments.

And as for my favorite horror movie mother of all time, let's take a look at the three stages of responsible parenting, Marge Thompson style:

(((Mostly Sober)))
Level-headed enough to remember the details
of the horrible things all parents are responsible for
that've doomed their children

(((Drunk)))
Anesthetizing the pain away with the bottle of Jack
hidden beneath the bath towels,
this will usually end with a slap and then tears.
Repeat nightly.

(((Wasted)))
She has no freaking idea where she is right now.

I liked it a lot, Nat. I was worried it was gonna feel long when I saw it was a 3 hour flick about nut-jobs, but it didn't. I'd never even heard of it until a few weeks ago, but I can't remember where that was. I do remember reading Ebert's review which is ridiculous, all about Dalle's nudity, when to be honest I thought Jean-Hugues Anglade, the male lead, was naked a lot more than her. It was basically a one man sausage fest.
