I'm out of my head when you're not around! Urgh, now that blasted tune is enveloping my brains. Sigh. Anyway, I quote the great poets Daryl Hall and Mildred Oates in reference to all the stories I've seen online as of late warning that the Big Summer Flick of this weekend, Speed 
Racer, might not be as big as was once expected. Apparently the film isn't tracking too high, box-office-wise, and the studio's spinning it's wheels spin to try and make their expectations more reasonable, blah blah blah, I never like to talk about box office so why am I bringing this up?
Because I'm out of my head with anticipation for Speed Racer, I think it looks like tremendous fun and have since I saw that first trailer, and... well I don't get it. Meanwhile the Iron Man trailer only slightly peaked my curiosity, and sure enough I ended up being merely meh about the film, but it's this phenom with the massive box office and (94%? Seriously, Rotten Tomatoes?) rave reviews.

What I'm saying here is, I'm beginning to doubt my commitment to Sparkle Motion... no no no, I mean I'm beginning to doubt my taste-maker abilities. You know, like The Freshmaker, just less fresh, more tasty? Yeah, that. So many movies I go nuts over wanting to see either get shuffled all over the calendar (Hi, Rogue) or turn out to be total flops once released (Hi, Grindhouse), I... I am having a moment of self-doubt here.
I know I'm preaching to the choir really; anybody who reads this blog has, I would assume, some of the same interests as I do. I just... okay, here's my point, what this entire ramble's purpose is: Can somebody tell me why Iron Man is more appealing than Speed Racer? I need this laid out for me, in plain English. I mean... Christina Ricci, Mario Kart and a monkey, for god's sake!!! Those are like my three food groups!

Even though I anticipate all summer movies equally, I think the issue boils down to this.
Iron Man was obviously going to be a part origin/ part first bad guy story, so everyone knew what to expect going into it. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, but then, I managed to get in for free.
Speed Racer has two things going against it: 1. It's PG....so the film was obviously made primarily for the 12 and under crowd, as generally PG movies for adults just aren't made anymore.
2. The trailers offer no semblence of a plot, which makes me think that the film will be 135 minutes of race scenes strung together by the most basic plot threads that could be imagined. And as enticing as the visuals look, more than just visuals are needed. I'll still be seeing it though.
I am starting to think that Ironman had much more of a geezer/ Viagra appeal than I would have thought. Downey is no spring chicken and no matter how hard he works out he will never hide the damage. Part of this audience and the reviewers are the dip-shits who made Ghost Rider a hit. In the end I think you might be asking what people saw in Alvin and the Chipmunks that Speed Racer didn't have.

Caught your blog after googling "Speed Racer". I saw the movie and LOVED it. Definitely check it out and post your thoughts. Iron Man and Speed Racer are two completely different movies. I liked the smartness of Iron Man and learning how RDJ became the super hero. Speed Racer is a crazy, mindless, 2 hours of entertainment, a movie like you've never seen before.

See, it seems that so many adults on sites I visit are against it for two reasons. a) omg there are too many colours! too many edits! ooh "my eyes hurt" shut up! your eyes do not hurt. And if they do it's not Speed Racer's fault. YOU NEED GLASSES! and b) it's the Wachowskis who burnt out any goodwill on The Matrix Revolutions and V for Vendetta (even though they didn't direct it).
