Too Much To See!

I know it's annoying to those of y'all reading outside of NYC or LA whenever I go on one of these tangents, but there are weekends where being a cinemaniac in a big city is overwhelming, and this weekend is one of 'em. Let's take a look see at the 7 (!) films coming out or playing here in Gotham as of today that are drawing my interest...

10,000 B.C. and College Road Trip - These are not the movies I'm talking about. No, just no, no no. But these will probably top the box office for the weekend. Yay stupidity!

Snow Angels - The quickly-becoming-ubiquitous David Gordon Green's new flick, starring Sam Rockwell, Kate Beckinsale, Michael Angarano, the underrated Nicky Katt, and AMY SEDARIS. Even if this wasn't a DGG film - which is enough to get me in the theater - the presence of Amy Sedaris reaches into my wallet and take the 12 bucks all on its lonesome. Here's a bit of what the NYT says:

"To his credit Mr. Green tries to break with the dour conventions of this glum, unadorned style of realism. For one thing, somewhat remarkably, “Snow Angels” is frequently quite funny — not in a glib or mocking way, but in the way that life, even at its worst, can be. Even in despair and under duress, people make jokes, say silly things and even laugh.

Mr. Katt and Ms. Sedaris are especially helpful in this regard, since they are able to suggest ridiculousness without making fun of the characters they are playing."

CJ7 - Stephen Chow's new flick, starring himself opposite the cutest goddamned alien ever created.

Paranoid Park - Yes, it's another quasi-pedo Gus Van Sant movie about a cute semi-androgynous teenage boy adrift in a sea of oh-so-inexpressible things. But it's getting good reviews and, with Milk on the way, I'm feeling somewhat generous towards ol' Gus.

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day
- Normally this would be the sort of movie I'd want nothing to do with, but my love for Frances McDormand runs very, very deep, and then there's the little matter of Lee Pace. Mmm Lee Pace. Mmm Lee Pace with a British accent playing the piano with jaunty shoulder movements and a day's worth of stubble.

The Bank Job - This is getting surprisingly strong reviews, and I do like me some Statham, but his movies appear to have slipped into the category of "I'll catch it on DVD" and I'm not sure why. He almost always entertains.

Fear(s) of the Dark - This is playing at "Rendezvous With French Cinema", a mini-fest happening at Lincoln Center; it's an animated film with six interwoven segments, including one by Charles Burns, the artist responsible for Black Hole, of which I was very fond and which is being turned into a film in its own right by David freaking Fincher. Word's been mixed on Fear(s), but Burns' presence makes it something I can't miss.

Be Kind, Rewind - Yeah, I know this opened a couple weeks ago, but I haven't gotten to see it yet, and am getting around to it this weekend all these other movies be damned.

I cannot wait until the presumptive awesomeness of CJ7 on a big movie screen becomes a reality in my city!!
