Wes...

.
Sometimes... sometimes Wes Craven makes it difficult for us fans of his. This is the man that brought the world A Nightmare on Elm Street, the Scream trilogy (or is this one a thrill-ogy? I can never remember), New Nightmare, The Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left... He's a horror icon, to be sure. But then... well, some of his misses are soooo deeply painful (Cursed, anyone?), and happen frequently enough, that they cast a long shadow over his reputation. Or they do in my eyes. I'm petty.

So when I read a story that Wes is gonna sit down and direct another movie (taking time off from his busy schedule of producing remakes of his early work, I guess), I feel like I ought to be more excited than I am. Via BD, here's word on his new project:

"We caught wind of a project that somehow has been kept off everyones radar. Patrick B. e-mails us about Midnight Pictures' latest project, 25/8, which will be written and directed by Wes Craven! As legend has it, a notorious serial slayer will return to the sleepy community of Riverdale to finish off the seven children born on the night he purportedly died. But is the slayer really dead, or is he still at large? Or has the mysterious evil personality that once impelled his bloody spree entered the body of an unwary teen, who will now be compelled to do his evil bidding? Filming is set to begin soon in Connecticut. Watch for casting news as soon as it comes in."

So... it's sounding pretty Freddy Kreuger, right? A notorious killer returns to a small town through supernatural means to kill kids that are somehow entangled with his apparent earlier demise. But still, it could be totally different, that's just the basic story and lord knows there are only so many stories - the meat of it, as they say, is in the execution. Is that what "they" say? I think no one says that. Anyway.

I love Wes, but Wes steals from Wes a lot and I think that Wes should call Wes on it so that Wes would stop doing it.

Wes really does know how to tear away at the facade of the Craven brand, doesn't he? I mean, I liked the Hills Have Eyes remake (probably moreso than the original, actually), but the sequel that he wrote (with his son!) was the first movie I saw from 2007 (so far). Just... aah. It's like he doesn't even care sometimes.

Having said that, he will always have a place in my heart.
