Park's Thirst

.
Director Park Chan-wook's name floated to the front of my consciousness yesterday when I realized I hadn't heard anything on his next project in ages. His last film, I'm A Cyborg But That's OK, didn't see any sort of release here in the States, which is a shame - it made #7 on my list of 2007's Best Movies; if you can find it, watch it, it's wonderful (here's my original review).

Checking IMDb I see he's doing/done a segment for the New York City-based "sequel" to Paris je t'aime called New York, I Love You, and after that he's supposed to be working on a vampire-flick called Evil Live - which I posted about wayyyy back in January of '07.

Well it's no longer called Evil Live, apparently; according to Dread Central it's now called Thirst, and casting is just now falling into place.

"Looks like Oldboy and Lady Vengeance director Park Chan-Wook’s search for a leading lady for his upcoming vampire film, now being called Thirst has finally come to an end…

We first mentioned this a few days back (“Park Chan Wook Needs Women!” – February 2008), that since Thirst will have multiple scene of sexual interaction and nudity, Park was having difficulty finding a woman who would be willing to do such things on camera.

Well, he’s found one in the form of Arang and Dasepo Naughty Girls star Kim Ok-bin according to KFC Cinema today. Thirst tells of a well-respected priest (The Host’s Song Kang-ho) who becomes a vampire after a failed medical experiment. He begins down a path of depravity with a new taste for flesh and blood involving the wife of his best friend, who will be played by Kim.

A nine-month shooting schedule is planned for Thirst, so don’t expect to see anything for a while, with a release date that will likely be sometime in 2009. Here’s hoping it’s worth the wait!"

I can't imagine anything Park directs not being worth a wait; as I've said before, he is, alongside Michael Haneke, probably my favorite living director.

But... a nine-month shooting schedule? You're killing me here, Park! Nine months for you to shoot, then lord knows how long in post-, and then we here in the States always get screwed over with your movies and it takes months upon months for us to catch them in any form. Good grief. I'm going to be old and gray and upset the kiddies with the squeaking of my walker as I jerkily try to find a seat right in front of the screen so I can read the subtitles with my half-blind eyes. Sigh.

How can you see movies that aren't distributed here. Do you some "region" magic that allows you want to non-Region 1 DVDs or something.

I like your blog. Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately I do not have a region-free DVD player - except for my laptop; all laptops are region-free - so I usually scour Ebay or there's a store here in NYC in Chinatown where they can be found as region-free discs. Just takes some searching if you know what you want.

And thanks!
