Wolf Creek, The Second?

While I know it's not the most popular opinion, at least among those not viciously smitten with the horror genre - read Ebert's hysteria-tinged review for that point of view - I think, along with The Descent, that Wolf Creek is the best horror movie of the past two years (it placed 3rd on my 7 Scares of the past 7 years list). I mean, these two movies are genre classics that, in my oh-so-humble opinion, will stand equal beside the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Exorcist in 20 years.

That grand pronouncement aside, I am, of course, very curious about what Wolf Creek director Greg McLean has been up to since making WC. I read a review of his upcoming "Giant Crocodile" movie, titled Rogue, over at AICN a few weeks back that was seriously unkind, especially in regards to star Michael Vartan, so there is some worry there, but it's too early at this point to really know.

And now there's word, via DH, that McLean is considering doing a Wolf Creek sequel (of sorts).

"Australian writer/director Greg McLean, finishing up work on his crocodile horror flick "Rogue", still has plans to bring "Wolf Creek" maniacal Mick Taylor character back to the big screen reports Moviehole.

McLean says that The Weinstein's wanted a sequel right away, but he decided to wait - "[Wolf Creek] was designed to be a particular kind of horror film, not the kind of film you can just pop 'em up. They get trashy. I'm really proud of the film and I don't want to just put out a piece of shit - so if it takes two or three years, it doesn't matter".

Would he still want to do one? "I possibly will be [doing the sequel]. I want to do it. It's such a great character". He hopes to work with his "Rogue" star Michael Vartan, best known for his role on TV's "Alias", in future films."

Regarding your comments about Michael Vartan's performance in Rogue, I find it interesting about the "two" reviews at AICN, especially the second review by a person who obviously does not like Michael Vartan under any circumstances. You might want to check out the two following links wherein two different people also saw the test screening and enjoyed Michael Vartan's performance:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0479528/board/thread/57780157?d=57780157#57780157

I do believe Greg McLean has directed Mr. Vartan to portray a person who is extremely frightened at what is taking place and who doesn't become an "over-the-top" crocodile hunter/killer but instead portrays a man who is thrust into a terrifying situation and in a realistic manner, tries to overcome it. How strange do I find it that the reviewer at the first link posted above sent his review to AICN and AICN hasn't posted the review. I tend to think that AICN might be just a bit biased. BTW, from a most reliable source, I understand that the majority of the test audience at the test screening were mostly positive about the movie as well as "all" the acting. And I also understand the Weinsteins were very happy at what they saw as well. While the reviews all seem to discuss the "slowness" of the first part of the film, I tend to think Mr. McLean will make the proper adjustments.

Alrighty then. That was thorough.

For the record, though, I do like Michael Vartan just fine. I saw Alias through all the way to the end, and was traumatized by his (fake) death.

I also saw him on the street once and he was like 1000 times hotter in person.

And I hope he's terrific in Rogue, as I hope the movie is excellent as well.

So I'm happy to hear that there's other better word out there on the movie! I will check out those reviews you linked to; thanks for the info!

Um, giant crocodile. What more do you need?

Obviously it takes very little to impress me.

Firstly, the review you linked to lost me the second he said he didn't understand the appeal of the croc tour that Vartan's character is on. How can this guy be an Aussie and not know why people would wanna go up there? It's beautiful up there and the crocs are cool if they don't wanna eat you.

And secondly, the croc in the film is a regular everyday croc that you find up there. It's not a giant one like Lake Placid. It's just normal. It just also happens to have a healthy appitite.

As much as I want to see another Wolf movie, I want to see what McLean can do with other genres.
Wolf Creek is a beautiful movie and his manipulation of perspective was amazing.
