Fur On Film

///

In my half-awake state this morning I found myself slipping in and out of a semi-dream in which I was doing a post about the upcoming Nicole Kidman film Fur. I titled the post "Fur On Film", and linked to the brand new trailer, which had finally been released.

Unfortunately there is no trailer yet. My subconcious has cheated me! Cheated us all!

Seriously though, I had no idea this film was even hovering around my brain so strongly that I'd have such a dream. I am a big fan of photographer Diane Arbus (Fur's a skewed-sounding semi-biopic, or as they're calling it, "an imaginary portrait", of her, if you don't know), and the film's on my radar, it's just, as you can tell by the lack of a trailer, poster, or much in the way of images from the film that exist at this moment in time, a little early to be posting about it.

I think maybe it was reading the blurb about the film in EW's Fall Preview issue a couple of weeks ago that pushed it up in my brain? Here's what EW said:

"Ask anyone involved in Fur to describe the film, and the first thing you're likely to hear is that it's not a biopic about the late photographer Diane Arbus. ''It is a fantasy that attempts to portray what might have been Arbus' experience during a three-month period of her life,'' says director Steven Shainberg (Secretary), who grew up surrounded by Arbus' work. ''Basically, in 1958, after working in her husband's photography studio for 15 years, Arbus strikes out on her own.'' And in doing so, she meets a man named Lionel (Robert Downey Jr.), who helps her figure out ''who she was and what she was after.'' Well, in this version, anyway. Lionel didn't actually exist. Did we mention he's covered in fluffy animal fur?'

'It's very odd,'' laughs Nicole Kidman, who stars as Arbus. ''But I'm interested in things that are unusual.'' Before signing on, the actress knew little about Arbus, who took her own life in 1971 (her death does not figure in the film), so she pored over Patricia Bosworth's 1984 biography and spoke with people who knew the artist. ''I don't have to look like her [or] sound like her,'' explains Kidman. ''I just have to hope that my spirit joins hers and they intertwine for a moment.'' Now, if you'd just explain the fur to us..."

Now somehow I was denied, in my dream-state, some sort of "Robert Downey Jr. covered in fur" dream-figure, which makes me feel especially cheated. He should've been there! He could've been standing over my shoulder as I typed this dream-post, at the very least! I could've warmed my cheek against his fuzzy bosom, it would've been lovely. Lovely!

So I'm doing a post anyway, even though there's not a lot to share about the film yet. My brain so decreed I must. The film's got a website that has nothing to share yet right here. There are also a bunch of odd (would they be otherwise?) photos of Nicole Kidman in a white nightgown rolling around in the surf at the IMDb page here. And when the trailer presents itself, which I imagine should be relatively soon, I'll share. Since I am an haunted man, apparently.

I am so glad to read someone talking about this movie. I have been thinking about it ever since hearing about it. I am a huge fan of Arbus and Downey jr so this movie is a must see for me. Robert recently did an Inside the Actor's Studio and they showed a pic of him very quickly as Lionel in them movie. He had a mask on and looked very mysterious! wow.. I can hardly wait. If you go back to IMDB there are photos there of Robert walking around with Nicole/Arbus with what looks like a paper bag over his head with eye lashes drawn on it. How cool is that! check it out! they are on wireimage too. there are also photos of him with Nicole/Arbus on the beach after she has shaved him in the movie. There is a lot going on in this beach scene but I don't want to spoil it for you.
