A Very Haneke Weekend

...

I'll finally be finishing off my Michael Haneke checklist this weekend with a viewing of two films of his I have yet to see: Code Unknown and The Seventh Continent.

If you'll remember me mentioning, there is a Haneke Retrospective going on at the Anthology Film Archives right now.

For my birthday last weekend I got to see 71 Fragments of a Chronology of a Chance, which - while maybe not being the best way to prep for birthday fun; man it's deeeepressing - was really excellent.

Meaning I have yet to dislike one of his films.

The weakest I've seen, I'd have to say, is Time of the Wolf, which I had really high hopes for but was ultimately a bit disappointed with. His films usually end with a bang but TotW ended with more of a whimper. I was hoping for a bit more of a punch in the gut from a Haneke movie about the end of the world! I guess it took Armagedden to soften the guy. Still, Huppert is fascinasting and there are moments of real greatness through the film. I may like it more upon a return viewing.

Otherwise, in Haneke's filmography, there are three genuine big-time favorites of mine - Funny Games, The Piano Teacher, and Caché - and then Benny's Video which I really really like having seen it once but do feel the need to watch again before deciding my full opinion on.

So, what I'm saying (again) is, see this chap's movies! They're all on Netflix! Get to it.
