Tim Burton & Sweeney Todd

/////

Talk about a match made in Grand Guinol heaven! From DH:

"Paramount and DreamWorks are putting Sweeney Todd on the fast track with Burton at the helm reports the trades. DreamWorks is now rushing to cast that movie, utilising a script by John Logan (The Aviator) adapting the famous Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical.

Burton already is talking with Johnny Depp for the lead role as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. With Depp's "Shantaram" project falling apart the other day due to its director departing, the actor now has an early 2007 window freed up for the project."

I haven't seen the musical - it apparently takes an Act Of God to get me to the theater - but it sounds right up Burton and Depp's alley.

You can read Nathaniel R's much, much more informed take - he's actually seen the show! - at Film Experience on this way back in January right here.

"I don't know whether to be delighted or terrified. I love the Burton & Depp combo and they definitely have their stylistics and goth going on...but Sweeney Todd works better (I think) as near-horror rather than as dark whimsy (though it certainly has hilarious moments). And can Depp sing? The Sweeney Todd score is very challenging."
