By golly, I'm just determined to do my part on lining the studio executives pockets a little more. Here's me shilling another DVD release that I get nothing in return for doing - ahem, HEAR ME, SONY? I AM GETTING NOTHING IN RETURN FOR THIS - I just recently expounded on why I think Michael Haneke is one of the most talented directors working today, and the movie that got the ball rolling, Caché (Hidden) is coming out next Tuesday, June 27th.
A great, great film that's haunted me since seeing it last Winter, it stars Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil as parents whose lives are suddenly interrupted by strange videotapes of the outside of their house that start arriving on their doorstep. Where are the videos coming from? Do they have secrets buried that are trying to claw their way out?
As usual, Michael Haneke blames you. Me. Us, for watching. Good times.
And speaking of Haneke, I watched Benny's Video last night, a film of his from 1992, and the man has got his themes down. More implicating the audience for watching, and the characters for their desire to see things as if they are objective, outside viewers and not really doing/experiencing these terrible things themselves.
What I found really interesting with Benny's Video was the casting and the way it messes with one's perceptions of Funny Games which he made five years later - Benny, the homicidal young boy, is played by Arno Frisch, who plays the homicidal young man in Funny Games, and Benny's father is played by Ulrich Mühe, who is Georg, the father of the family terrorized by Frisch in Funny Games. Adds a little layer of... something, there.
