As a kid, I, like most kids, loved Roald Dahl. I remember my 3rd grade teacher reading us several of his books - on a sidenote, kids in 3rd grade these days are learning calculus, aren't they? Sigh - we read The BFG, The Twits, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and my absolute favorite, The Witches. (I was honestly never a huge Charlie & The Chocolate Factory fan... crucify me now)
I must've read The Witches 20 times after that. But I don't have any strong memories of watching the film as a kid; but then, the movie did come out when I was 13, so I may've been on a Dahl-haitus during my Tetris-filled teens.
The first time I remember seeing the film version was in my late-teens; I must've been 17 or 18. And I loved it. Anjelica Huston was, is, just fantastic as the Grand High Witch.
So, my first thought upon hearing that they're going to make another movie version this morning was, why? But then I read it's Guillermo Del Toro who's going to direct and... now I'm torn. That man could make an awesome movie of The Witches. And as much as I do like the original movie, it's pretty much 90% due to Huston; the rest of the film is kind of a blur... I do remember the Jim Henson puppetry fondly.
Whomever Del Toro does hire to play the Grand High Witch, she's got her work cut out for her. Otherwise, I think I'm cool with this, after seeing the names attached. Alfonse Cuaron is producing as well. That's a scary-kid-flick dream team right there.
