The Writer's Guild has just released a list of the top 101 Screenplays ever written, according to them (download the entire list here in .pdf form).
La-dee-freakin-da. Lists are arbitrary heaps of bullshit, but here's their top ten anyway:
And here are the rankings of the ones that really matter:
15. The Apartment
21. North By Northwest
24. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
(keep in mind, that Shakespeare In Love is at #28... and everything that follows it is therefore being called not as well-written as Shakespeare In Fucking Love)
32. Fargo
43. Taxi Driver
51. Broadcast News
54. Manhattan
61. The Silence of the Lambs
63. Jaws
68. Star Wars - are you fucking kidding me? I mean, it's no verbal-abortion like the recent trilogy, but the dialogue is still pretty freaking bad.
74. Being John Malkovich
81. Being There
83. Rear Window
84. The Princess Bride
86. Harold & Maude
92. Psycho
101. Notorious
There are only a couple of films I don't think belong on the list at all (Star Wars? Really???), but the whole thing needs a vigorous shaking until it rearranges itself correctly.
I'm waiting, Writer's Guild.

Shakespeare in Love's screenplay is actually one of the best of the last couple of decades. Probably not high enough.
But then I studied it for an entire year at school, so...
I was being a bit of a smart-ass about SiL; I actually enjoy the movie, and it is extremely well-written. But (BUT!) I wouldn't place it higher than a lot of the films that did come after it in that list.
And seriously, where the hell is Donnie Darko? Any script that includes the line "I'm beginning to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion" is a classic!
