The Hills Have... Mehs

///////
Michael Bailey Smith in Fox Searchlight's The Hills Have Eyes

So I ended up being sorta disappointed by the remake of The Hills Have Eyes. My problem seems to have been... it was a remake. I know - duh. But it was - besides giving the killers some backstory and some small alterations in the second half - basically the same exact movie as the original, just with actual production values and not-half-bad acting.

Which, normally, would be enough, I think. Or should be. And I will say that there is no reason for the original to ever be watched again; that if anyone wants to see the story of The Hills Have Eyes they should just see the remake and the old version can be forgotten.

But, for someone who had seen the original already, I really found myself waiting for a shock, something to change up and grab me but... it never happened. The scene that everyone always talks about, in the trailer with the women, the baby, and the two freaks (new sitcom title there?), that scene played out exactly the same as the original and... why shouldn't it, really? It was a kick-ass terrifying scene in the original, and it's a kick-ass terrifying scene here. But... it's the same! I was hoping something would change to shock me, but... it didn't.

So... I guess I can recommend the movie if you've never seen the original. The story does have some great creepy moments to give. And... I dunno, maybe I'm just being stupid and bitter and will think better of the movie with time. The boyfriend had seen the original with me seven or so months ago, and he loved the remake... so what do I know?

Meh, whatever.
