My, Those Globes Are Golden

I didn't realize the Golden Globe nominations were coming out today. Thought it'd maybe be a day's respite from me braying about Brokeback... oh well!

BBM got the most nominations with seven... which fucking should've been eight. Can't even believe that Jake G. didn't get nominated. But these are just the Golden Globes, after all... I'm holding out hopes that Oscar will see things more clearly. I mean... Will Ferrell in The Producers??? I mean, granted, I've only seen the trailer, but... but... his character looks like he walked out of an episode of Hogan's Heroes! Sigh.

Anyway, here are the nominations, with my choices in red, with some commentary below each category, where I'm able to make them... I haven't seen everything, but that doesn't stop most people from blabbering on about their choices and it ain't stopping me!

Best Motion Picture Drama
Brokeback Mountain
The Constant Gardener
Good Night, and Good Luck
A History of Violence
Match Point

Okay, duh, right? I've seen 3 of the 5, haven't seen Match Point yet but am dying to (loves me some Woody), and only sort of want to see GN,GL. I liked both The Constant Gardener and A History of Violence a lot, but... come on.

Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy
Walk the Line
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Pride & Prejudice
The Producers
The Squid and the Whale

I'm refraining from choosing in this category because I ain't seen a one.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck
Terence Howard, Hustle & Flow
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man

Again, duh. I liked Capote a lot, but PSH didn't come anywhere near to moving me like Ledger did, and I found PSH's performance really confusing on a lot of levels - how much of a bastard was Capote supposed to be? When was he being genuine? PSH didn't sell me at a lot of points that he even knew. Not to mention he should not get rewarded for bringing that voice to my ears.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geishal
Charlize Theron, North Country
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Maria Bello, A History of Violence
Gwyneth Paltrow, Proof

I'm voting for one I haven't seen here... the shame! I just figured it'd be nifty to have both Lead Actor and Actress win for playing gay men. Sue me.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
Johnny Depp, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Nathan Lane, The Producers
Pierce Brosnan, The Matador
Jeff Daniels, The Squid and the Whale
Cillian Murphy, Breakfast on Pluto

Johnny Depp for his creepy, all-too-distracting Willy Wonka? Huh? Anyway, I've been wanting to see S&W, and like Jeff Daniels a lot, so that's why I'm picking him. Again, sue me. I considered picking Murphy to get me a queer trifecta, but... no.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Laura Linney, The Squid and the Whale
Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice
Sarah Jessica Parker, The Family Stone
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line

I was torn between Linney and Witherspoon here, but Reese gets to bone Ryan Phillippe so that's her freaking prize.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Bob Hoskins, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Will Ferrell, The Producers

I pick Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain. Bastards.

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Scarlett Johannson, Match Point
Frances McDormand, North Country
Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
Shirley MacLaine, In Her Shoes

Holy crap, you're thinking! He didn't pick Michelle Williams??? Craziness! The world has ended! This was a hard one, and Weisz really ought to be in the leading actress category, and I'd be pleased as punch for Williams to win... but my love for Rachel Weisz knows no bounds, I just think she's been amazing in everything she's done, and especially here in Gardener.

Best Director
Steven Spielberg, Munich
Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck
Woody Allen, Match Point
Fernando Meirelles, The Constant Gardener
Peter Jackson, King Kong

Ang is the man. He deserves this shit.

Best Foreign Language Film
Kung Fu Hustle (China)
Master of Armor Crimson (China)
Merry Christmas (France)
Tsotsi (South Africa)
Paradise Now (Palestine)

All I've seen is Kung Fu Hustle, and I enjoyed it but I have a feeling one of the other films seriously deserves an award more.

Original Score
King Kong
Memoirs of a Geisha
Brokeback Mountain
The Chronicles of Narnia
Syriana

I downloaded the theme music to BBM yesterday from iTunes. I left work, turned it on, got about 30 seconds into it and burst immediately into tears. That's a winner, in my book.

It's been a very long time since I've seen it, probably ten years or so (has it really been out that long?) but yes, I have seen it. I only remember the basic story - guys torment deaf girl - and not much else, but I must've liked it because I'm pretty sure I have a VHS copy in my endless piles of VHS tapes buried in a corner. So... not a lot of help there. I am pretty sure I've seen all of LaBute's films, though, and I do find him to be pretty talented. I love Nurse Betty, and find it vastly underrated, though that's the least like his other films.
