Do Unto Others...

So I'm supposed to be buying Christmas gifts for other people. You know, how the holiday works, and all. But once I get throwing things in my Amazon cart... well, I just can't help myself, and I end up with as much for myself as for anyone else. Happy Holidays to me!

I won't get them until next week (damned shipping delay!) but here's what's got my toes curling today:

Oh pretty. What I'm most excited about is the doc on the extra disc where WETA, the special-effects house behind the Peter Jackson remake, recreate the infamous long-lost "Spider Pit" sequence, which the director removed from the film because he thought that giant spiders would be way too much for the audience of the age to handle. Pussies! I cannot wait to see what they made.

In speaking to people lately about the remake, I've been shocked - shocked! - to discover how many people I know that have never seen the original. How do you get to adulthood without having stumbled upon it on TV some time? I can't comprehend.

This film makes me cry every time I watch it. Course, if you know me, it doesn't take a whole heckuva lot to make me cry. But still, it always surprises me that I have such a strong reaction to a black-and-white beastiality romance.

Poor Kong!

Listen, I'm not going to defend Tom Cruise. He's loonier than Daffy Duck sitting on a buttplug. And I had some problems with the film - ahem, ENDING - but overall I thought it was fantastic. I reviewed it way back when, so I'll avoid rambling about it again.

I just know I loved Spielberg's use of 9/11 imagery and themes, and can't wait to get a look at several sequences - the first attack; the ferry scene - again.
