Anybody catch VH1's But Can They Sing? last night?
Oh... goodness.
God knows I've done my fair share of Bai Ling ribbing on here, and really the girl does invite it unto herself with her red carpet beef curtain extravaganzas of the past several years, but... it made me, for a moment, feel really bad for her last night, watching her caterwauling and rolling around on the stage to "Like A Virgin." She just seemed so... eager to please, and happy. I don't want to be the mean guy who faults a girl for trying. Trying sooo hard... yet, unfortunately, failing sooo spectacularly.
Now, she sings in the film Dumplings in Chinese and she sounds okay. So I'm thinking the added pressure of singing live AND in a second language is what did her in. And, to be honest, I can only imagine what I'd sound like if thrown on a stage and told to sing in Chinese. She was up against pretty much insurmountable odds, and she, out of all the losers on that show, showed real fucking bravery. So I commend her for that.
But then, she had to go and tear off the bottom of her dress, prance around in a beef-curtain-flaunting thong and do some weird shimmy into the commercial break. Just when I was having a genuine like for the gal.
Well, at least she's consistent.
You can download the audio of her (and a couple others) performance here, if you're feeling especially masochistic. I honestly changed the channel after Bai Ling was done, I'd had my fill of celebrity embarrassment for the evening. But I'm gonna go and vote for her at VH1. She's got... moxie, that one. Morgan Fairchild and Antonio Sabato Jr. can suck it.
