Phew. Dodged a bullet, as the Republicans would say. They're going ahead and making a movie of Richard Matheson's classic I Am Legend without waiting around for Arnold Schwartzenegger.
Thank goodness. While Arnold may be the acting-heir-apparent to Charlton Heston, who starred in the 70's version of the book, The Omega Man, that film, while campy and cult-adored, just ain't very great, and a really terrific movie could be made out of this book.
See, the main character, Robert Neville , is intelligent, and spends a hefty chunk of the book figuring out the science behind what's happening to the world and his neighbors, and bulky is about the extent of adjectives... emotions... character traits that Arnold can play.
So good. Arnold be gone. Maybe they can cast an actual actor, and resist the urge to turn it into a brainless shoot-em-up. Maybe?
Yeah, I know, I am optimistic to the point of retardation. Oh well.
Constantine, the director's previous film, had some really strong elements, casting being one of the best, I thought. Specifically Tilda Swinton as the Archangel Gabriel and Peter Stormare as Satan. The film itself was a bit of a muddle, but I'm relatively okay with this choice.
Though, as a trade-off to getting rid of Arnold, we also lose Ridley Scott as director, which... well, that coulda been awesome. I wish Ridley would make a movie I wanted to see again. And don't even mention Gladiator, an overrated piece of testosterone-spoiled dung if I ever did see an overrated piece of testosterone-spoiled dung.
