Summer Movies

As I've readily admitted, I spend a lot of time and money during these hot months wasting it all on crap. I'm not sure I'll be as quick to the theater this summer as I've been in the past, now that Netflix has fundamentally changed my movie-viewing patterns (sidenote - I do not work for Netflix, however much I may praise the service; indeed I have a love-hate relationship with it, since it has essentially devoured a huge chunk of my life), but I still intend to see way more than I ought to, even knowing fully well that the movie I'm going to will suck. Because

A) it's hot outside, and me no like the sweat
B) I've been unable to shut off the portion of my brain that orgasms at BIG explosions
C) what else am I supposed to do? Exercise?

All of the above, of course. However, much to the chagrin of the Hollywood bigwigs who're having panic attacks about the fall in box office receipts, there isn't a whole lot I can even think of that I am interested in seeing in the next few months.

The reviews I've read for Batman Begins are beginning to get me excited, and the previews are looking better with each new one. I would've seen it anyway, but now I am beginning to muster some actual interest.

On the other side of the faux-relationship beat, the one movie I've been excited about since day one and remain so is War of the Worlds, even with that Spazz Supreme in the lead. Spielberg + Aliens = Me There Yesterday.

I've already seen The Number One Movie Of The Summer, that Sith thing, and I enjoyed it, though (risking a stoning) I'll admit I'm not a big Star Wars fan. The past two films did nothing to change that, and while this one was entertaining it doesn't really warrant much beyond a shrug frome me. Some of my best friends would skin me alive for saying that to their face. Come and get me!

Another movie I am excited about is Romero's Land of the Dead. Actually, I might be more excited for this than WoW. It's been far too long since Romero got to work, and the fact that it's a fourth Dead movie makes me nearly wet my pants with delight. I have to admit I'm also worried he'll fuck up the fantastic trilogy he's got already, so... fingers crossed. Don't pull a Lucas, George!

I'll see Fantastic Four because... well, see my last post.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith looks fun, and director Doug Liman has a lifetime of goodwill stored up from making Go. Plus... so pretty, pretty, Brad and Angelina, pretty...

And... that's about all I can think of right now. I'm sure there will be a movie here and there I'm interested in enough to go and see. There are always some under-the-radar horror flicks that appear out of nowhere. I've heard good stuff about Nightwatch (Nochnoy dozor), as well as Undead.

The three movies I'm most anticipating, though, come out this Fall. Expect to hear a lot of talk about Brokeback Mountain, Strangers With Candy, and Serenity in the next few months around here. Gay Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Sedaris, and Joss Whedon are VERY BIG DEALS here. You know that question about who you'd want to be stranded on a desert island with? I just named them.
