I had hoped to find a Buster Crabbe Movie that wasn't 1934's grand Olympian farce Search For Beauty with which to wish Buster a happy birthday today (he was born 111 years ago!) since I've given this movie some good love a'plenty before. But then I found the above line of dialogue and liked it to much not to share -- tis timely, too. Point being you should watch Search For Beauty sometime, and bless Buster Crabbe for existing. It was the 100th anniversary of Ida Lupino on Sunday and our friend Dan Walber gave her some love in his weekly Production Design column at The Film Experience, but today is the 11t0h anniversary of her co-star in the 1934 film Search For Beauty, the Olympic swimmer turned movie hero Buster Crabbe, and so I'm gonna grab the wheel on this one. We've posted about Buster before because you can see why but even though I had posted a promotional shot from this shower scene in Search For Beauty I don't think I had ever actually watched the scene properly before - and it's worth watching! 

The whole movie's online right here - his swimming scene and post-swim shower are after the six minute mark. The Code ruined everything, man. The Production Code was established in 1930 but most studios ignored it for those first few years - 1934 was actually the last year that was possible since that's when, in June of that year, the first Ratings Board was created, and of course a rigid Catholic (named Joseph Breen) was put in charge. And out went the naked guys running through locker-rooms!

The world wept. Anyway Buster was quite the beauty and charmer and he managed to have a long career, even after he wasn't allowed to strip naked on-screen. But we'll always have this scene! Hit the jump for several more gifs from this scene plus a few more pictures worth your time of ol' Buster...

Did anybody else catch the 1933 Western To the Last Man on TCM last night? I started watching just to kill time before Game of Thrones and Randolph Scott looked so dashing in his cowboy couture, and had so much chemistry with his brother Buster Crabbe...

... I couldn't quite stop watching it. It was pretty great, as far as 1933 Westerns go -- there's a rather amazing scene where someone shoots the head off of Shirley Temple's dolly that shouldn't be missed by anyone who reads that sentence and immediately thinks "That should not be missed." And there's a terrifying rock avalanche that kills like twenty people at once that I should probably do for our "Ways Not To Die" series some day.

Anyway naturally I found myself looking up pictures of Randy during the movie and lord knows I have seen (and posted) some pictures of him and his "roommate" Cary Grant before, but never this rather spectacular shot below...

Buster Crabbe, the Olympic swimmer turned actor who played Tarzan and Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon and Billy the Kid in tons of serials back in the 30s and 40s, was born on this day 105 years ago. He even had a comic book series! I would have read it if I'd been a kid back then, for sure. Hit the jump for a bunch more pictures...
