Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Francine: What's the Theory of Relativity,
that light is curved?
Jimmy: I don't know.
Francine: They say that only five people in the
whole world, you know, know really what it's about.

Even though she's decidedly not My Thing (save brilliant Cabaret of course) I won't be Bad Gay enough to not wish Liza Minnelli a happy 80th birthday today. I've only seen New York New York one time and save Robert De Niro being hot as hell in it the movie didn't make much of an impression on me -- that said I'll probably watch it again some time since Scorsese is Scorsese. If y'all had to recommend one of her movies that wasn't the two I just mentioned which would you? I don't think I've ever even seen Arthur; if I did I was just a kid and far too young for it. Anyway -- any of you reading Liza's just-released memoir? Any good gossip?

I adore New York, New York. I think I’m one of maybe five people on the planet who would say that. I’ve seen every version multiple times, and this is my favorite Minnelli performance. If you’re looking for a recommendation, I suppose you can’t go wrong with her second best work in the Fosse film. ;-)

But since you already mentioned that performance (oops), try Charlie Bubbles, by and with Albert Finney.

I liked New York, New York the first time I saw it, but the director’s cut, released a few years later is better. Charlie Bubbles is a charming movie. Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon is a decent movie, too. She made a TV Movie, A Time to Live, playing the mother of a child with muscular dystrophy that was rather good as well. I saw her in concert twice. She’s truly amazing!

Last time Liza performed in NYC at The Palace I won tickets. Front row center. I was seated next to the director and his wife. She started out one song with, 'Excuse me sir' directly to me. I burst into tears. Magical. She's the very last of her kind, isn't she?

In “The Sterile Cuckoo” (1969), she plays a kooky, but lovable, early Sally Bowles type of character. Liza’s first Best Actress Oscar nomination. Also, Wendell Burton is very cute as her boyfriend.
