Happy New Years

.

.
Y'all enjoy a splendid entry into Oh-Eleven, and MNPP will be back to doing the nonsense we do best - or at least most - on Monday.

Cheers!

"Herzog" Does The Night Before Xmas

I know this has been making the rounds for awhile but I figured I'd save it for the actual day before the night before Christmas, where it belongs. I want this to echo across the entire day, the entire weekend, saturating the festive spirit with that sweet, sinister Herzogian glow. Hysterical.

Stephen Dorff Two Times

.

(via) Since I'm off to familial pastures tomorrow I won't be seeing any new movies until next week, but I think I'm most excited for Sofia Coppola's Somewhere. Course I did just read A.O. Scott's review and he's far more enthusiastic than most people have been, so perhaps I have been brainwashed. What are your movie plans over the next couple of weeks?

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Scrooged (1988)

James Cross: You know what they say about people who treat other people bad on the way up?

Frank Cross (Bill Murray): Yeah, you get to treat 'em bad on the way back down too. It's great, you get two chances to rough 'em up.
.

Who Wore It Best?

When I saw these paparazzi shots of Tom Hardy on the set of Tinker Tailor Soldier and Spy with that monstrous 'do plopped on his head I knew it was bad, but how bad? In the hierarchy of bad-movie-wig-dom, all must be judged against the most foul offender...

What Are You Smirking At, Gary Cooper?

.

I have the distinct impression that it is a dirty thought
passing through your mind, sir. And I like it. I like it!

True Grit For The Hunger Games

.

I guess that True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld is currently benefiting from a (probably publicist driven) whisper campaign to play Katniss in The Hunger Games movies. But even if I'm cynical of the rumor's origins I can't say that I'm against the idea - based off of True Grit's commercials, that is; I haven't seen the film yet unfortunately. But on the surface I gotta say... yeah, she looks sorta right to me.

Anyway I figured most of us will probably venture out to see True Grit over the holidays so this would be a useful poll to have up once we have an impression of the girl, and can come back and let our judgment be known! Judge lest she be judged, or whatever.

Good Morning, World

.

.
Do they still play this commercial? I feel like they ought to still play this commercial. It's classic! Peter should be coming home again and coming home again year after year until the actor's corpse has withered and turned to dust.

Speaking of one's body withering and turning to dust, hello! I'm actually slightly better (read: slightly less ready to throw myself in front of a subway train) today, and will probably post a couple of times at least. Lucky y'all! It's a Festivus miracle!

Pity Party Of One

.
There's really nothing more pathetic than me when I'm sick, and oh lawdy am I sick right now, so I'm gonna keep this brief lest we walk right off the deep end of self-pity - I'm sick, my bathroom ceiling is pouring water, I am leaving to visit my family in 48 hours and I haven't packed or even completely finished my Christmas shopping, much less wrapped a goddamn thing, I'm working on like four hours of sleep and long story long none of this is properly lending itself to posting.

Really though I'm just sick of staring at Rodrigo Santoro's face every time I look at my blog so this post is an excuse to bump him down a notch (sorry Rodrigo, it's not personal).

Also this might be it until after the holiday.
So on this terribly festive note, Happy Holidays!

Less Than Forget But More Than Begun

I usually get frustrated with albums by The New Pornographers because I'm really just listening to them to hear some Neko Case is what it comes down to, and she's never in their songs enough. Never! I mean really all I want it her from first to last, so of course she isn't. But I guess they did an acoustic version of their song "Adventures in Solitude" for the "It Gets Better" project for bullied gay teenagers so I will share. I haven't listened to it yet so I can't vouch for amount of Neko within. (via)

Ho Ho Hardy

.
It's going to be another very busy off-the-blog sort of day for your ol' pal JA today, so you should probably expect it to be on the quiet side. Maybe tomorrow too. The holidays, man, they're a killer. But hey look at that new shirtless picture of Tom Hardy, that makes up for some of it...

Holly Suffy Jolly

.

Okay not only did a pair of new Sufjan Stevens Christmas songs make their way online today, but in seeking out a place to download the files as mp3s - read more about them here (they include The National!) and then you can download them right here! - and not just listen to them online I stumbled onto the fantastic Fuck Yeah Sufjan Stevens! tumblr and fell far far down the rabbit hole. So many pictures I've never seen before! And so many without sleeves! It's a Christmas miracle! Hooray! Here are a bunch of my favorites.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Martha (1974)

This post, like so many of my favorite Fassbinder moments, is dedicated to Barbara Valentin and her incredible face. Whenever she pops up in one of his movies I do a little dance - I love looking at her. Her face is magic, and Fassbinder knows it and he saves her for moments where he wants that pop. I've expressed this before... but it does bear repeating.

Of course she's just one of many. I'm pretty much infatuated with all of Fassbinder's troupe. Just a few names that spring to mind - Margit Carstensen, Brigitte Mira, Irm Hermann, Hanna Schygulla. And then of course all of the swarthy, hot men... Fassbinder himself, Armin Meier - check out this extremely NSFW picture of Meier and then lose the rest of today unto it - El Hedi ben Salem, and Karl Scheydt being the swarthiest and hottest in my opinion. And yes, I think Fassbinder was sexy, don't look at me that way. None of them are the usual pretty boys but Fassbinder made them sexy.
