I suppose that writing this comment so long after the fact is moot and you may no longer be adding comments, but I've read all of your articles here several times since seeing the film in May. I live in Louisiana and was only vaguely aware of the film because I don't keep up with pop culture. It's too depressing to see what's going on everywhere because I lived in NYC for 23 years and San Francisco for 7 years before that, so being here is like being in a cultural desert. Anyway, I'm curious that those commenting on what Samuel meant when he said he'd come close to what Elio and Oliver had never mention that, immediately afterwards, Elio, on his way upstairs, thinks "I vowed to ask him about his life. We'd all heard about his women when he was young, but I'd never even had an inkling of anything else." Then "Was my father someone else? And if he was someone else, who was I?" Is this ignored because Elio is an unreliable narrator? And I'm speaking about the book. Any thoughts? Many thanks for your wonderful blog.Tommy S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09619615854402301675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13372093.post-13174240726156060582018-08-24T03:06:15.572-04:002018-08-24T03:06:15.572-04:00Thanks for analyzing the morning after breakfast s...Thanks for analyzing the morning after breakfast scene. I have watched this movie sooooo many times but only last night did I notice that Oliver has obviously moved Elio’s chair closer to him than it would normally be. It would have always been centered per the first morning breakfast and the “almost slept together” scene. But Elio sits down moving it away from Oliver. And of course he sits down very gingerly!

This movie has so many intricacies. You discover something each time, and your interpretation of things can change. It’s a wonder!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13372093.post-76206309752616803432018-06-03T03:02:20.507-04:002018-06-03T03:02:20.507-04:00This is just gorgeous, Jason. There’s a richness to his interior life that the movie (and actor) fill but don’t explain. It just makes me look at he and his wife and what they are feeling about elio even more interesting. (But if I must add, having read the book several times and watched the movie 4 times now, and both gave me impression that professor Perlman meant not the gay thing, but the intense thing. Many straight men in their youth don't dare to come closer to object of their desire for so many reasons... The only “data” that gives me pause are the lines about the statues that Perlman delivers to Oliver. I think we’re so used to hearing those sensuous words about male bodies from the perspective of Oliver and Elio’s relationship that we forget that Perlman is a classical archeologist who is a connoisseur of the male form.

Anyway, thank you for all of your coverage of the movie. This post is a delightfully minute analysis, with a wonderful shoutout to Amira Casar, whose work in the film hasn’t been praised enough, but I also enjoy your simple, unapologetic adorations. I went through your entire archive about the film, as part of my own less-developed obsession. Even if you don’t rewatch the film, I hope you’ll continue to post about it, just as I imagine Elio sniffing the billowy shirt long after Oliver was gone.Owen Walternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13372093.post-7061569084490826862018-01-11T06:21:11.608-05:002018-01-11T06:21:11.608-05:00I think you can make an argument that Prof. Perlma...I think you can make an argument that Prof. Perlman might have had some uncertainty about his sexuality. I sometimes got the impression he may have had some attraction to Oliver that he lived vicariously through his son. But that's just one possible interpretation, and not necessarily the most robust or likely.Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05281727200554480875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13372093.post-51247672541714850432018-01-10T18:46:53.123-05:002018-01-10T18:46:53.123-05:00I adore how you analyze scenes. I have seen CMBYN 6 times now and am just as mesmerized as the first time I saw it. Will probably try and catch it in theaters a few more times as nothing is as immersive as a giant screen in a dark room. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that even after reading the book a couple of times and seeing the movie a couple of times it never struck me that what Elio's Dad could be talking about is a possible relationship with a man that he might have but never had - it was my boyfriend who first floated the idea to me. And since then i have heard a ton of people see it the same way, but honestly I really have to force that viewpoint on myself. It still doesn't feel 100% natural to me.

I think when he's talking about never having had what Elio & Oliver had he's just saying he never had an overwhelming in-over-his-head love experience like the one they did - that his relationship with Elio's Mom came later, after he'd already been through a few fine but not stratospheric relationships, and he wished he might have had that experience. Every time I re-watch the movie I try to see the gay thing and I just don't think it's necessary. Possible, i suppose, but I don't think we need to read his words that way.Jason Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18254334131909339157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13372093.post-41655200117164312612018-01-10T15:31:00.183-05:002018-01-10T15:31:00.183-05:00Following from this post: i'm curious what you...Following from this post: i'm curious what you think of the parents' relationship? what missed opportunity is dad thinking about at the end in his own life? how does that complicate his happy marriage? was it a man? I think we all focus on what he's communicating for Elio but I am struck but what it hints at about the man himself...but I can't quite put my finger on what it is.Tom Mnoreply@blogger.com
